HP Omen X
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hey Guys,

I noticed that in the HP Omen Laptop which i bought, the CPU has overclocking capabilities (Core i7 - 7700HQ) 2.8 to 3.6ghz. When the CPU Overclocks while playing some of my most favourite games, the machine heats up (temps from 88 to 97) to the extent that it generates BSOD (Blue Screen of Death).

Now once i disable the overclocking, the games run fine and the laptop also stays real normal in temps (65 to 79).

So all i wanna ask is does the Omen have inbuilt cooling system to maintain proper temps when CPU overclocks?

I mean if that CPU has been installed in the laptop, there definitely should be a cooling system to manage the temps of the CPU when it reaches such high levels.

Any advice pls

Hi! Sorry for the late reply, Holidays have been crazy!

That is a more reasonable temperature but still a tad higher that I would expect on a beefier OMEN X Chassis...
My OMEN 17 (Non-X) runs at about 60-70°C on most games, More demanding games like GTAV tend to hit closer to 75°C on a -0.150mv undervolt...

So hitting 83°C is really odd for a 7700HQ with Undervolt.... I strongly believe there is something wrong with your OMEN X, Badly applied thermal paste or a missing screw on the heatsink retainer.

How is the noise on the fans? with those temps it must get pretty loud right?
Since there is no O.S. Level fan control you must rely on the automatic fan control of the BIOS so, Unless it gets chilly by itself? those temps wont improve any further with Undervolt... That is why I believe there is something wrong at hardware level.... The bummer is that the BIOS only allows the fan to cool down its own component so the CPU fan will only ramp up with CPU temp while the GPU fan will only kick in with GPU temp, This means you must hear one fan louder than the other. On my OMEN 17 the GPU fan stays quiet, it hardly does anything as my 1060GTX never reaches above 65°C.

The 7700HQ has no overclocking capabilities as it is a locked CPU..

What you are referrring to is the TURBO BOOST which is what the CPU is capable of doing by default.

It seems that something is wrong with the laptop if it cannot sustain the Turbo Boost speed.

Is the laptop old? has it been opened before? its very unlikely that the high end OMEN X chassis cannot maintain proper temps with the older 7700HQ... So you can pinpoint the thermal paste or badly seated heatsink.

You can also try underVOLTING see this thread: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Gaming-Notebooks/HP-Omen-Overheating/m-p/6919800#M14170

Tell us the results.

Hi Skirmich

Thanks for the reply.

Apologies for the terminology used. It is Turbo boost.

The laptop is 1 month old. It has never been opened.

I have already reinstalled the OS plus the drivers again but it did not help. For under volting I made the cpu to undervolt to - 0.145. And then played one game but the machine restarted on its own. If the thermal paste has an issue can I get it replaced from authorized hp reseller

Hi Skirmich,

Set the Core Offset Voltage to -0.145 and applied it.

Did a stress test and temp was between 66 to 79 degrees celcius.

When playing a game (assassins creed), the temp went to 83 degrees.

Any idea
