OMEN 17.3 inch Gaming Laptop PC 17-ck0000 (2Y4A9AV)

Hi

I have posted before on this -- but there's been no helpful response from HP having been directed from here to the formal feedback channels which I submitted comments to.

The issue is a REALLY basic one.  The HP tools (various parts of the Gaming Hub - including Overlay modules which I have no desire to use, and Lighting Studio which I do) seem to be assuming the user is logged in as Admin.   Since it's really bad practice to be constantly logged in as Admin for routine PC usage (due to what Malware could do on your account permissions), so I am definitely not going to change that behaviour.

Omen Hub (particularly Overlay.Helper) are constantly asking for Admin account..and I cannot disable the overlay helper (or take it out of startup using the usual methods) without uninstalling the Gaming Hub.   I also can't figure out why HP don't get rid of the assumption of admin (I'd be happy to "run as admin" for the hub I guess if there was a way of making that stick and not having to redo).

I'm currently planning to uninstall gaming hub because of this when I've researched a better way of toggling the machine into high performance modes for gaming sessions, and off afterwards -- which doesn't seem to be quite the same as the Windows power schemes.

Prior posts have directed me to the feedback for the gaming hub.  Don't bother -- I've submitted feedback there twice over a few months and haven't had so much as an acknowledgement from HP.

Hi @JurorNumber8,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your PC!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It appears you're facing issues with HP Omen Gaming Hub modules, such as Overlay and Lighting Studio, assuming the user is logged in as Admin, which is considered poor practice due to security reasons. While I understand your frustration, here are some steps that might help resolve your issues:

Run HP Omen Gaming Hub as Administrator:

  • Right-click on the HP Omen Gaming Hub icon.
  • Choose "Run as administrator" to grant the necessary permissions for the app.

Change Permissions for HP Omen Gaming Hub:

  • Navigate to the folder where HP Omen Gaming Hub is installed.
  • Right-click on the application executable file.
  • Go to 'Properties' -> 'Security' tab.
  • Click 'Edit' and then add the necessary user permissions.

Update HP Omen Gaming Hub:

  • Make sure you are running the latest version of HP Omen Gaming Hub as updates could contain bug fixes and permission changes.
  • Check the HP Support site or use HP Support Assistant to ensure all software and drivers are up-to-date.

User Account Control Settings:

  • Adjust User Account Control (UAC) settings in Windows to allow the HP Omen Gaming Hub to run properly.
  • Go to Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Change User Account Control settings, and set it to the lowest level to avoid disruptions.

Reinstallation:

  • Consider uninstalling and then reinstalling the HP Omen Gaming Hub with administrator rights.

I hope this helps.
