OMEN 17.3 inch Gaming Laptop PC 17-ck2000 IDS Base Model

HP Open kept crashing installing Windows Updates for a year. Tried BIOS update and now the network downloads are 50 to 100 times slower that similar one-year-older laptop next to it. One minidump implied Comodo was involved and stopped to try and isolate this. Reverting the BIOS said it went from 4.0 to 4.0 when HP Support Assistant says the BIOS is F.13 while the year-older OMEN 17.3 inch Gaming Laptop PC 17-ck0000 laptop shows BIOS F,50. Still getting downloads of 20 Mbps on newer vs 900+ on older. Seems cmdguard.sys from COMODO was involved in this last bluescreen with it stopped. So I have the 2 issues - original blue screening and now dismal networking. I have spent so much on this

@mheffler, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Based on your detailed description, you're facing two major issues with your OMEN 17.3" Gaming Laptop PC 17-ck2000:

  1. Frequent crashes during Windows Updates (possibly linked to Comodo and cmdguard.sys).
  2. Severely degraded network performance after a BIOS update.

Here’s a structured approach to resolve both:

Issue 1: Crashing During Windows Updates

Root Cause: The crash dump pointing to cmdguard.sys suggests Comodo Internet Security may be interfering with system processes.

Steps to Resolve:

Fully uninstall Comodo:

  • Use the official Comodo Uninstaller Tool to ensure all drivers and services are removed.
  • Comodo Uninstaller Tool

Run System File Checker:

   sfc /scannow

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  • This will repair any corrupted system files.
  1. Check for corrupted Windows components:

   DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Update all drivers:
    • Use HP Support Assistant to check for and install all updates.
    • Especially update chipset, Intel ME, and network drivers.

Issue 2: Network Speed Degradation After BIOS Update

Symptoms: Network speed dropped from 900+ Mbps to ~20 Mbps after BIOS update.

Steps to Resolve:

Compare BIOS Versions:

  • Your current BIOS is F.13, while the older model has F.50.
  • This suggests your BIOS may not be the latest or may have regressed.

Reinstall Network Drivers:

  • Go to Device Manager > Network Adapters.
  • Right-click your Wi-Fi and Ethernet adapters → Uninstall device.
  • Reboot and reinstall the latest drivers from HP’s site.

Reset Network Settings:

  • Open Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset.
  • This will reinstall all network adapters and reset settings.

Disable Power Saving for Network Adapter:

  • Go to Device Manager > Network Adapter > Properties > Power Management.
  • Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”

Additional Diagnostics

  • HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI:
    • Press Esc during boot → F2 → Run full system test.
    • HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

Final Notes

  • If issues persist, consider a clean Windows reinstall after backing up data.
  • You can also post your minidump files on the HP Community for deeper analysis.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I had tried all of that. Even signed up for HP Smart Friend and tried a system retore preserving data and the laptop was powered off in morning with no changes. I think I will limp along until I can get a replacement laptop and transition to reduce downtimes
