Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution

Hello,

I bought an HP Victus (70Wh battery) about 12 days ago. From the beginning, HP Support Assistant and BIOS/UEFI have been showing a full charge capacity of only \~63Wh (around 90% health). The cycle count is just 11.

I get only about 2 hours of battery backup on normal usage (no gaming). I’ve kept the laptop plugged in while gaming and sometimes even after it reached 100%.

Is this drop normal for a new laptop, or should I visit an HP service centre for a warranty claim? Could this be a calibration issue with the battery reporting?

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Hi @Beastishu,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for reaching out and sharing the details so clearly. I understand how frustrating it can be to see reduced battery health on a brand-new laptop, especially when it affects your daily usage.

🔍 Here's what you need to know:

Battery Health at ~90% (63Wh out of 70Wh)

A slight drop in full charge capacity (to ~90%) within the first few weeks can be normal due to:

  • Initial calibration inaccuracies.
  • Battery wear during factory testing or shipping.
  • High charge states while plugged in (especially during gaming), which can accelerate chemical ageing

However, 2 hours of backup on normal usage is unusually low for a new HP Victus laptop, and it’s worth investigating further.

1. Run HP Battery Diagnostics

Use the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI tool to test battery health and get a Failure ID if there's a hardware issue:

  • Turn off your laptop.
  • Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly.
  • Press F2 to enter diagnostics.
  • Go to Component Tests > Power > Battery and click Run once.
  • If the battery needs calibration or shows failure, follow the on-screen instructions.

2. Calibrate the Battery

If diagnostics suggest calibration:

  • Fully charge the battery.
  • Disconnect the charger and let the battery drain completely.
  • Recharge to 100% without interruption. This helps reset the battery gauge and may improve reported capacity.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
