Hi,

I feel like the brightness of my screen has recently been getting darker and darker. Never had this issue before and I've had this laptop for almost 2 years now. All the windows settings are adjusted to 100% but it's still very dark. The HP support assistant says there are no updates available or anything. Do I need to download certain software or drivers, and if so which one?

Hope anyone can help me with this.... It's very annoying.

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

I see that your notebook brightness is very low,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Have you attempted any steps on your own before posting on the HP Forums?
  • When was the last time it worked without these issues?
  • Have you updated Graphics and Chipset drivers?
  • Have you checked the display on an external monitor?

While you respond to that, let’s try these steps to resolve the problem:

I recommend you attempt to access the BIOS screen by tapping on F10 while the computer is restarting,

If the issue persists in the BIOS screen which is outside windows, it would confirm a hardware failure.

However, if it doesn't show up in the BIOS, it would confirm a software issue and we'll need to reinstall or update the display drivers using the Official HP Website: Downloading or Updating Software and Drivers for HP Computers.

Also, update the BIOS following steps from the article: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00042629

If the issue persists, after updating the drivers, let’s try these steps:

Hard Reset: Follow steps from the article: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01684768

Set Enable adaptive brightness to Off:

  • Right-click the battery icon in the Taskbar and select Power Options
  • Click on Change plan settings (Next to the power plan selected).
  • Click on Change Advanced power settings.
  • In Advanced power settings, expand Display from the list.
  • Then expand Enable adaptive brightness and ensure it is set to off.
  • Click Apply and Ok to save

Let me know how that pans out

I hope you have a good day ahead,

If I have helped you resolve the issue, feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below,

Followed by clicking on "Accept as solution" from the drop-down menu on the upper right corner,

Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum.  Have a great day!
