Victus by HP 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop 15-fb3000 (A8RU3AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I don't find any instructions anywhere how to command these special marks. Especially smaller than and bigger than marks are located in pad L, but I can't get any of these special mark out of this. And I have tried it all... shift, fn, ctrl, alt, alt gr, but nothing comes out of it. I need these quickly. Thank you.

@macce,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

On your Victus by HP 15.6-inch Gaming Laptop (15-fb3000), the problem isn’t the hardware but the keyboard layout setting in Windows. The less than ( < ) and greater than ( > ) symbols only appear correctly if your Windows keyboard layout matches your physical Finnish/Nordic keyboard.

Step 1 – Check your Windows keyboard layout:

  1. Press Windows key + Spacebar → this cycles through your installed keyboard layouts.

  2. Make sure you see Finnish QWERTY (or “Finnish”) selected, not US or UK English.

    • If it’s wrong, go to Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Keyboard layout and add/select Finnish.

Step 2 – Where to find < and >:

On a Finnish QWERTY keyboard, the < and > symbols are on their own key:

  • It’s the small key to the left of the spacebar (between Shift and Z).

  • Press it directly for <.

  • Press Shift + that key for >.

Step 3 – Finnish Keyboard Layout (diagram):

Here’s the standard Finnish layout (QWERTY):

┌───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───────┐
│ ´ │ 1 │ 2 │ 3 │ 4 │ 5 │ 6 │ 7 │ 8 │ 9 │ 0 │ + │ ´ │
├───┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬────┤
│ │ Q │ W │ E │ R │ T │ Y │ U │ I │ O │ P │ Å │ ¨ │
├─────┴┬──┴┬──┴┬──┴┬──┴┬──┴┬──┴┬──┴┬──┴┬──┴┬──┴┬──┴┐ │
│ │ A │ S │ D │ F │ G │ H │ J │ K │ L │ Ö │ Ä │ ' │
├───┬──┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴─┬─┴───┴───┤
│ < │ Z │ X │ C │ V │ B │ N │ M │ , │ . │ - │ Shift │
└───┴───┴───┴───┴───┴───┴───┴───┴───┴───┴───┴──────────┘

  • The < > key is on the far left bottom row.

  • On Nordic keyboards, it’s separate from the comma and period keys.

Summary:

Select Finnish layout in Windows [to add and select the Finnish keyboard layout in Windows, go to Settings > Time & language > Language & region. Click on Add a language, search for and select Finnish, then click Next and Install. Once installed, you can switch to the Finnish layout by clicking the language abbreviation in the taskbar or by pressing the Windows key + Spacebar to cycle through your installed layouts] -then use the key left of Z for < and > (Shift for >).

Once your system layout matches your physical keyboard, all the other special characters (Å, Ä, Ö, etc.) will also work as printed.

Kind Regards,

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. The problem here is that in my physical keyboard there are no this key between shift and z. I have wider shift key than usual and right next to it is Z key. And "less" & "greater" marks are located in key L.  See picture below.image0.jpeg

Can you check my latest message. I need help with this urgently.

@macce,

Your follow-up changes things quite a bit. Your Victus clearly doesn’t have the Nordic physical keyboard (with the extra < > key left of Z) but instead a US/UK style keyboard, even though you may have expected Finnish.

Btw, thanks for the photo -that explains the confusion!

So, your Victus actually has the US/International physical keyboard layout, not the Finnish/Nordic one. That’s why you don’t see the dedicated < > key to the left of Z (your Shift key is wider instead).

On this keyboard:

  • The < and > marks are typed with the comma ( , ) and period ( . ) keys using Shift.

    • Press Shift + ,<

    • Press Shift + .>

The legends printed on your keyboard near the L key are probably showing alternative characters that only work if you enable a specific Windows layout (such as US-International or another variant). But for standard Finnish typing, it’s much easier if your physical keyboard matches the Finnish layout.

So, the way I see it, you have two options:

  1. Keep using your current (US-style) keyboard → type < > with Shift + , / Shift + . as described.

  2. If you need the full Finnish layout (with Å, Ä, Ö, and the dedicated < > key) → you’d need a Victus with the Nordic keyboard variant, or attach an external Finnish keyboard, such as this Amazon-DE purchase example: https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Lenovo-Essential-Wired-Keyboard-Swedish/dp/B09Z2KX6MT/ref=sr_1_4?crid=231....

This mismatch happens sometimes when a laptop is sold in one region with a different keyboard layout than the local standard.

Kind Regards,
