There appear to be 3 symbols on the tilde key. What do I have to press to get tilde.

Are you talking about ~ key ? That is depending on which keyboard and software you using. I'm using US  International keyboard

 

(a) To type  ~  alone, all I need is to use Shift and ~ key (under the Esc key).

(b) To use it in Spanish software ñ, ã Ã õ Õ

(c) To use it as in Vietnamese software: ũ, Ũ, ữ , ĩ,  ã Ã õ Õ .... for example : Cũng đành thế thôi !

 

You can also use Unicode to type it as mentioned in

 

             https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilde
