OMEN by HP - 17t-an100 CTO
Microsoft Windows 11

I need a way to charge/use OMEN 17 on long airplane flights - thinking to buy extra battery - 922977-855 - but need to charge it EXTERNALLY using lower wattage EXTERNAL charger that works on low power airplane outlet. Any ideas ? Thank you.  The USB-C port apparently does NOT charge the OMEN.

Hi @845823-004

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Charging your OMEN by HP 17t-an100 CTO laptop externally while you're on long airplane flights is definitely a useful idea, especially since you’re thinking of using the FM08 922977-855 battery as a secondary battery. However, your situation is a bit more complicated since the laptop’s USB-C port doesn’t support charging, and you're looking for a way to charge the battery externally using a lower-wattage external charger that works with airplane outlets. Let’s walk through your options:

Key Points:

  • OMEN by HP laptops are usually high-performance machines with high-power demands, which can be challenging to charge with low-wattage sources (such as airplane power outlets).
  • The FM08 922977-855 battery is a custom laptop battery, meaning it’s designed to charge within the laptop itself, rather than via a typical external charging station.
  • USB-C ports on many modern laptops are often only for data or video transfer, not charging, depending on the specific model, so this is a limitation for your use case.

Options for Charging the Battery Externally

External Laptop Battery Charger

  • Unfortunately, OMEN 17t laptops are not known for supporting external battery chargers for the FM08 922977-855 battery. In other words, there isn’t a commercially available external charger designed specifically for this model's battery.

Portable Battery Pack for Laptops (Power Bank)

  • Laptop Power Banks that support high-wattage charging could be another option. These are external power banks designed to charge high-power devices like laptops. Many power banks today offer USB-C PD (Power Delivery) and can output anywhere from 30W to 100W, which could be used to charge your laptop directly if the USB-C port did support charging.
    • Unfortunately, since your USB-C does not support charging, this route isn’t viable unless you explore other options.
    • You could look for a DC output power bank that provides high-wattage output and connects to the laptop’s power input port (via a DC-to-DC cable adapter). For example, products like Omni 20+ or MAXOAK portable power stations might provide enough power for your laptop, but they need to be compatible with your laptop's power input requirements (typically around 150W or more for high-performance laptops).

Using the AC Adapter and Car Power Adapter (if available)

  • Some airplane outlets provide DC power, which is typically 15-20V and lower wattage (around 75W-90W). Many laptop power adapters are designed to handle input voltage ranges (e.g., 110V-240V) and may work with airplane outlets via a DC-to-AC power inverter.
  • Portable Inverters: You could potentially use a portable inverter (which converts DC power from the airplane outlet into AC power) to run your laptop's AC charger.
  • Keep in mind that airplane power outlets usually don’t provide enough wattage for high-performance laptops, so this might only give you a small amount of extra runtime or a charging option in a pinch.

Portable DC Power Station / Solar Power Bank

  • Some high-capacity DC power stations or solar generators come with multiple output options, including DC outputs that are compatible with laptop charging.
    • Look for units that provide a 12V-20V DC output that matches the charging requirements of your laptop.
    • For example, products like the Anker PowerHouse, Goal Zero Yeti, or Jackery Explorer can output at 12V/20V and may be able to charge your laptop if you have the right DC-to-DC connector cable.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Rachel- read ur comments RE-charging batt externally.  Yes; have been thru ALL those ideas; unfortunately, none pan out  ---  only 'listed' solution is 'power pack' that costs $2000 and STILL requires ~6 hrs to recharge -- by then I have arrived in Madrid !  I just ordered/tried [unsuccessfully] the 'mini' chargers, but they do NOT output enuf power .
RE: - Solar units - even though I was paratrooper, I don't believe AA will allow me to get out on wing to rig the solar
unit ! Ha Ha  Plus, it's usually a 'nite flight'.  I believe ONLY realistic solution is to determine from either HP or battery
manufacturer WHICH of the 16 pins need to be connected to a power cord that will plug into airplane outlet. I have ~20 old laptop 'bricks' which I believe could possibly be wired to the spare battery.  Lastly, I have NOT attempted to run the OMEN using ANYTHING other than the 30 pound charger cable that came w/unit.  I suppose I can sneak back to the APU [Auxillary Power Unit] on the airplane and run a heavy duty cord up the aisle; until the stewardesss spots it  !!! N E way, THX for attempts /comments.  Regards -- HF/DG
