Hp Omen 15
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
Hi, I’m having an issue where I can’t start my HP Omen 15 Win10 64 laptop.

I bought it secondhand for a pretty penny. I found that it only charged when the screen was off such as in sleep mode or off, never when being used.

Anyway, this past Friday, I was using it normally to do Illustration work until it ran out of battery power. It shut off but I had to leave and didn’t charge it over the weekend. The following Monday, the startup was taking too long and I get a black screen saying

“Boot Device Not Found
Please install an operating system on your hard disk.
Hard Disk (3F0)
F2 System Diagnostics”

I can enter:
-F7 Hp Sparekey Recovery
-F9 Change Boot Device Order
-F10 BIOS Setup Option

Almost nothing works:
-F11 recovery mode takes me back to this screen.
-F2 System Diagnostics tells me I have Version 1.11.0.0 - BIOS,
-Memory Check tells me everything is fine,
-Hard Drive Check doesn’t work as it tells me SMART Check and Short DST are NOT
-Holding The B key+ Windows key only makes the screen go black and the caps lock light blink without stopping

I didn’t have any outstanding issues before this. Is my hard drive really fried and gone?

Smart Check and Short DST are NOT INSTALLED.

If I’m missing any info, please ask.

I didn’t just update anything either. Maybe my CLIP STUDIO PAINT program?

Hi

If it is a software failure, loss of Boot Loader then that may, perhaps, be easily rectified.

If it is a hardware issue then all could be lost.

ISO images of various Microsoft OS's are available.

They can be be downloaded (sometimes you need a licence key other than the HP OEM key)
and 'burnt'/expanded to a DVD/USB. They WONT contain appropriate HP software, like drivers etc.
But may enable a repair to be started.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

and a HOW2 is here...
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/install-windows-10-from-usb

Usual response is Backup ypur Data, Make Recovery Media and buy a new HDD.

I would also include the CMOS battery as a possible problem also.

If in doubt please ask.

What if I don’t have a disc port?

Nevermind, I’ll get back to you.

Hi

what is a "disc port" ???

Your SKU could help.

Usually HP supply a Recovery area for creating external recovery media, like a DVD or USB.  If you do not have a DVD drive or any USB ports then you have problems.

This First part only works when a valid Recovery Partition is enabled.
If it displays an error message then move onto the Second Part:-
OR if you have data you wish to try and save using the XCOPY command.
Then create your own Repair/Recovery/Rebuild/Re-install media or buy a set from HP.

Turn off the computer.
Disconnect all connected devices and cables, Media Drives, USB drives, printers, & faxes.
Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware.
Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, or power cord.

Turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F11 key, about once every second,
until the Choose an option screen is displayed, and then continue.

On the Choose an Option screen, click Troubleshoot, and work your way through the screens.

Second Part:-
This may require another PC. Find and Download your .iso from…
(You will need a NON_OEM key for W7);
W8.x and W10 should activate automagically from their embedded licence key.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

For when it’s a NON MS OS ( iOS / Linux ) creating the install media.
www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

A 3rd party site is (Please be careful)...
https://mirror.corenoc.de/digitalrivercontent.net/

Expand/Extract/Burn the iso Image onto a DVD/USB as needed.
Microsoft’s Creator Tool will make the required DVD or USB.

Even though it has NO actual HP software/drivers included, you may be able to
XCOPY the C:\Users\* area onto a ‘large’ USB stick, via the Command Prompt.

You’ll need to try various drive letters; D:..-..Z: until it’s matched - could be G; mine’s S:

C:\>XCOPY C:\Users\* S:\ /e /i /h (then files like those 3 listed below get copied over)

C:\Users\desktop.ini
C:\Users\All Users\agent.1509128044.bdinstall.bin
C:\Users\All Users\HP Deskjet 2540 series\Help\flash\zoom.swf

Then you can try System Recovery Options / Advanced Options shown in the screenshots.

NB:- W7 Try running a Startup Repair more than once for a full fix.
NB: - W10 Begin with the Automatic Repair, then Startup Settings etc.

From either the C:\ or the X:\ prompt try the following
You may need to change the Secure/Legacy boot option, and the boot sequence also.HP Recovery Media Creation.png
cd boot
bootrec /FixMBR
bootrec /FixBoot
bootrec /RebuildBCD

If the above FAILS then please try:-

Haha, going by PS1 vocabulary. Thanks for the response!

Unfortunately, this may take longer than I thought since all 3 of my laptops are giving me the same menu. My first and oldest one: the first HPand My Asus.

Hi CF4, I know it’s been about a month, but I’ve finally been able to sit down. I’ve got to be honest, I don’t really understand what you’re saying after you said,
“Even though it has NO actual HP software/drivers included, you may be able to XCOPY the C:\Users\* area onto a ‘large’ USB stick, via the Command Prompt.

I don’t know what XCOPY is and that’s where you lose me.

I’ve already created the iso and loaded it up on my laptops. Unfortunately, I can’t get past the installation. On the Omen, told I have “Disk 0 unallocated space 0.0 MB no other partitions“ even though I have a TB of space.

On all 3 of the laptops, there is only blank space where it asks me to install on a hard drive. I can’t chose my hard drive.

I don’t know where to go from here. Does this mean my hard drives are fried somehow? I’m sorry, it’s a little difficult for me to understand your instructions.
