I have a hp omen 17 and i hooked it up to the hp dock g5 and everything worked perfectly. 3 days later after intensive gaming it just stopped working. I tried hooking up the thunderbolt cable to my asus rog g14 and it works perfectly fine. I've done pretty much everything every other person has pointed out and nothing works. I really like this omen and would like to keep except not being able to connect to my 2 4k monitors from 1 wire is a bummer.

Hi @Eddyg123,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like a frustrating issue with your HP Omen 17’s Thunderbolt connection. Here are a few troubleshooting steps to try.
Check for Driver Updates:
- Make sure you have the latest Thunderbolt drivers and firmware installed. Visit HP's support website to download and install any available updates for your Omen 17.
Thunderbolt Software:
- Check if you have the Thunderbolt software installed on your laptop. Sometimes, you need to manage settings or authorizations through this software.
BIOS/UEFI Update:
- Ensure your BIOS/UEFI is up-to-date. An outdated BIOS can sometimes cause compatibility issues. Visit HP’s support site for BIOS updates.
Thunderbolt Port Settings:
- Go to the BIOS/UEFI settings and verify that the Thunderbolt port is enabled. Sometimes, it can be disabled or set to a restrictive mode.
Reset Thunderbolt Controller:
- Try resetting the Thunderbolt controller. Disconnect all devices, turn off the laptop, unplug it, and hold the power button for 15 seconds. Then, restart and reconnect the Thunderbolt devices.
Check Thunderbolt Cable and Ports:
- Although your cable works with the ASUS laptop, try using a different Thunderbolt cable with the Omen 17. Also, inspect the Thunderbolt ports on both the laptop and dock for any visible damage.
Power Cycle the Dock:
- Disconnect the HP Dock G5 from the power source and the laptop. Wait for a few minutes, then reconnect everything and see if it works.
Thunderbolt Device Manager:
- Sometimes, the Thunderbolt device needs to be manually authorized. Open the Thunderbolt software and check if the dock or monitors need authorization.
Check for Conflicting Software:
- Ensure there are no software conflicts or issues with any other drivers or applications that might be affecting Thunderbolt functionality.
Hardware Diagnostics:
- Run hardware diagnostics to check for any issues with the Thunderbolt hardware. HP laptops often have built-in diagnostic tools available in the BIOS/UEFI or through HP Support Assistant.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

How do i check if the thunderbolt port is enabled? There is nothing in bios that has the option to turn on/off the thunderbolt port. When i plug the thunderbolt cable in, the computer makes a chime and recognizes that something was plugged in, however the monitors do not turn on.

Hi @Eddyg123,
Thank you for your response,
If your HP Omen 17's Thunderbolt port isn't showing up, and there are no options in the BIOS to enable or disable it, you can follow these steps to check if the port is enabled and troubleshoot the issue.
Check Device Manager for Thunderbolt Devices
- Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
- Look for Thunderbolt Controller under the System Devices section.
- If you see it, the Thunderbolt port is recognized by the system.
- If it's not listed, it could indicate a driver issue or that the port is disabled.
Install or Update Thunderbolt Drivers
- Visit the HP Support website and search for your specific Omen 17 model.
- Download and install the latest Thunderbolt drivers.
- After installation, restart your laptop and check if the port is recognized.
Check Thunderbolt Software
- Press Win + S and search for Thunderbolt Software.
- Open the software and check if your device is listed when you plug in a Thunderbolt device.
- If the device is listed but not working correctly, there might be an issue with the Thunderbolt firmware or drivers.
Verify Thunderbolt Security Settings
- Some systems require Thunderbolt devices to be approved before they work.
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers and look for a Thunderbolt device.
- If found, you may need to authorize the device.
Check Power Delivery
- Some Thunderbolt ports have specific power delivery requirements. Make sure the cable and device you're using meet these requirements.
Use a Different Thunderbolt Cable
- Try using another Thunderbolt cable, as some cables may not support all features, such as video output.
Check Monitor Configuration
- Ensure that your monitors are set to the correct input source.
- Some monitors require you to manually switch to the input source that the Thunderbolt cable is connected to.

Check for BIOS/UEFI Updates
- Even if there's no specific Thunderbolt setting in the BIOS, updating the BIOS/UEFI firmware might resolve the issue.
- Check for updates on the HP support site for your specific model.
Test with a Different Device
- If possible, test the Thunderbolt port with another device (like an external hard drive or dock) to see if it's a monitor-specific issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
