Thanks, Photoray.

Yeah, I'm not too pleased with an HP Support that gives vague generic info and then tells me that everything is fine and that I've "done well" when I'm explaining that I haven't done anything because their instructions were unclear and I am still having the problem.  Perhaps it was a robot response...

However, I still am plagued by Touchpad issues! I have a semi-functioning Synaptics driver from 2013 which I regularly have to "reset" whenever it (the cursor) hangs - several times a day. BUT it does allow Smartsense to be turned completely off allowing me to use Touchpad and keyboard at the same time, which is my original concern. Using a more recent driver was not allowing me this desired dual use. Smartsense was set to "Off", but the Touchpad would not engage until a second or two after keyboard use.

Performing the above posted Precision Drivers "hack" renders the Touchpad unusable (cursor disappears), so that didn't help. Attempts to update to the latest driver via HP Support Assistant simply downloads and extracts into  the SWsetup folder with a sp# folder and does not install. Attempts at manual install by double clicking HPsetup.exe inside that folder does nothing. Nothing executes.

My product # is 2TY42UAR#ABL

And I was lead to post here as the need to use both keyboard and mouse simultaneously is a common need in gaming .

I certainly do appreciate those who are genuinely attempting to help. thank you! But I am still very much in the dark.

The reg hack should not have rendered the mouse and pad useless. Hoping you got the right key changed?

Also, your model number with the R at the end indicates a refurbed model. This was a used laptop? Did it have this issue out of the box or later?

I'm not sure what else to offer you.

The latest Synaptics driver for your model was issued in Nov 2018 Windows 10 v1803  sp92533.exe Version 19.5.10.75.

I did find a newer Synaptics driver that is used on the Specter X360 df1000 series. Its compatible with Windows 10 v1909 sp100932.exe   Version 19.5.35.48.  It might help, it might not. I would create a Restore Point before installing, just in case something goes wonky. It shouldn't, but its a good thing to do regardless.

Im not sure if its just a touchpad gone wonky, or something screwing the drivers. A last resort would be to reinstall Windows. But thats going to have to be something you are comfortable with.  Or if a Mouse would be a workable alternative until you find the answer. Sorry I cant help more.

@Photoray002, Thanks for all your advice!

No, the Reg hack you suggest did not render my Touchpad useless. It was the "Precision Drivers" hack suggested above by @Jajaboss and discussed here - https://www.windowscentral.com/how-enable-precision-touchpad-drivers

This made the "precision" settings available, but the pointer disappeared and I could not get it re-enabled. I performed a restore to get back my functioning driver.

Thank you for the direct driver links ! This is what I was looking for, as the ones from HP Support Assistant will download and extract, but not execute, and I cannot find them at all on the Synaptics site linked to by Support. The current driver that I use (from 2013) allows for the function that I need, so your Reg hacks are not necessary at the moment (these settings in the Registry are already as you say - set to 0).  It's just that it otherwise is "buggy" with me having to reset the device several times a day.

I will try your links/drivers and rely on a Restore if it does not work.

Thanks again.

@Photoray002

I tried the softpaqs you linked to. Perhaps I don't fully understand how do a proper install with these. Clicking on them, they extract to the SWsetup folder. Then to install I run the HPsetup.exe in the appropriate folder there, I assume?

Doing so nothing apparent happens, but it seems to update the driver to the more recent version number (as determined in Device Manager) BUT I loose all "advanced" functions of the touchpad - no more multi-finger gestures, Smartsense settings, scrolling, etc. I only have basic control of cursor.

Isn't there something else that should be with these drivers that should install the Synaptics "enhancements"?

Yes, my computer was purchased as a refurbished model thru Amazon, and it came with the Touchpad working with current Synaptics drivers (with enhancements), but as I found the Smartsense/Palmcheck issue to be problematic for me, I sought out a way to fix this. Lacking the info about the registry hack, I opted for the earlier driver which I had read did not have this problem...

How, then, can I have a current driver, such as the ones in your links, and have the enhancements as well??

There is nothing special you have to do when running those sofpaqs. They unzip to the SWsetup folder by default, then should install automatically without any prompting.

But why you are losing the advanced functionality is beyond me. Unfortunately at this time, I have no way of replicating that error. Ever since HP stopped the loan program that allowed us volunteer "Experts" to get our hands on the equipment to test things with, my hands are tied. Im sorry.

OK. I understand.

From my searches it seems these issues came up for a lot of people after Windows update to  release 1909 (other tales of sofpaqs not installing and such). I guess I just continue to live with the frustrations and searches for resolutions.

Thank you for your time!
