Victus by HP Gaming Laptop 15-fa0000 (680A2AV)

The laptop experienced inconsistent power delivery. It was happening during gaming, and the battery was between 1% and 99%. So I did some troubleshooting to see if I could solve the issue:

  Troubleshooting:

  • I thought it was the charger because I have an older (and less powerful) laptop charger from the same brand, connected it and charging was consistent, and did gaming with it, but performance was slower. Judging this, I replaced the original charger with a new one from Amazon with the same wattage (150w). But the issue persisted.
  • I detached the battery from the laptop to see if the battery was the issue. The same thing happened, i.e., inconsistent power delivery while gaming, but the laptop turned off this time.
  • I ran some diagnostics to see if the CPU and GPU were fine. There was no issues.
  • I tried the battery calibration method. It didn't solve the issue of inconsistent charging/power delivery.
  • I reset the laptop with factory settings. It didn't solve the issue.
  • Took it to an authorized repair center. They did not see any issues.

Any other solutions?

@br14n02, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Based on your description and the HP Victus 15-fa0000 model, here are some advanced steps and insights to help resolve the inconsistent power delivery while gaming issue:

Charger Compatibility & Quality

Even though the replacement charger is rated at 150W, third-party chargers (even with the same wattage) may not deliver consistent power under high load (like gaming). HP laptops are sensitive to power delivery specs.

  • Solution: Use an original HP 150W Smart AC Adapter (Part Number: L32661-001 or similar).

Power Throttling or VRM Overload

Gaming draws high power from both CPU and GPU. If the Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) or power delivery system is stressed, it may cause shutdowns or inconsistent charging.

  • Solution: Update BIOS and chipset drivers:
    • Go to Official HP® Support
    • Enter your product: Victus by HP Gaming Laptop 15-fa0000.
    • Download and install the latest BIOS, chipset, and power management drivers.

Thermal or Power Management Settings

HP laptops may throttle or cut power to protect components.

  • Solution:
    • Enter BIOS (press Esc > F10 at startup).
    • Look for "Thermal" or "Power" settings and set to "Performance" or disable "Battery Saver" modes.
    • In Windows, go to Control Panel > Power Options > High Performance.

Battery Calibration & EC Reset

You’ve tried calibration, but an Embedded Controller (EC) reset might help.

  • Steps:
    1. Shut down the laptop.
    2. Unplug charger and all peripherals.
    3. Hold the power button for 30 seconds.
    4. Reconnect charger and boot up.

HP Diagnostics (UEFI)

Even if Windows diagnostics showed no issues, try HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Restart and press Esc > F2 to enter diagnostics.
  • Run Battery Test and AC Adapter Test.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Notes: I have Windows 11 24H2

Charger Compatibility & Quality:

  • Obstacles: None.
  • Result: I did that before you offered that solution, and got an HP charger. Yet the laptop still had the power delivery problem.

Power Throttling or VRM Overload:

  • Obstacles: None.
  • Results: After downloading the BIOS, chipset, and power management drivers, the issue persisted.

Battery Calibration & EC Reset:

  • Obstacles: None.
  • Results: After doing this method, the issue persisted.

HP Diagnostics (UEFI):

  • Obstacles: None.
  • Results: The results showed that everything is working well.

Thermal or Power Management Settings:

  • Obstacles: Checked for "Thermal" or "Power" settings in the BIOS, it didn't show these options. Went to Windows to go to the Control Panel and change, in the Power options, from Balanced to High Performance, it didn't show either.
  • Results: After dealing these obstacles, the only option I did was to open Windows > Settings > Power & battery > Power mode from Balanced to Best Performance. After that, the issue persisted.

Any options that I should do?
