So I should yank out the screen cable that's on the back of the display
HP Recommended

Do you mean that cable behind the laptop display where you can detach it from the laptop?

You need to open the laptop from back and look for screen cable disconnect it and remove it becarful you damage the componenet with sharp tools try to remove it slowly and plug the hdmi cable of the external  screen turn on laptop and see if  worked you should buy me a drink 😉🤣🤣🤣 if worked just tape the screen cable so doesn't make short with motherboard and close laptop. And you good to go .

Can you try to use like receiver or any other thing that works with hdmi port and use the same cable you using it and the screen and see if you get signal from it bcs it's weird you should be able to get signal from laptop after removing screen cable . Maybe 🤔 hdmi port damaged maybe cable 🤔 or your windows i want to check cable works and the screen you use works can you take photo of the cable you removed 😉.
