OMEN by HP 15-dh0015nt
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a HP OMEN 15-dh0015nt laptop with windows 10. Last night when i was gaming, the laptop froze due to overheating (The overheating is a general issue that i couldn't solve but this is not a thread for that) and i closed it from the power button. I waited for it to cool down then i booted it up. It froze when the omen logo came and i waited for 10 minutes then forcefully closed it from the power button. I tried this several more times but it didnt work. One time the fans became really loud with the frozen screen. Next time i got blue screen. Another time it tried to open the recovery environment but it froze at the loading logo again. Now the problem is that im not sure if its a hardware problem, i can open the bios menu. I tried factory reset on settings and booting up from external hard drive but it didnt work. I did hardware diagnostics, the harddrive test passed but it froze again when i tried memory test. I thought the problem could be ram so i opened the case to check if there is any problems with the battery, ram or the disk but i couldnt find any. I searched forums and youtube but couldn't find any solution.

Hi @Voxelr

Welcome to the HP support community.I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

Here's a structured troubleshooting process to help you get to the root cause:

1. Thermal Issue Diagnosis

Check for Dust and Proper Cooling:

Reapply Thermal Paste:

Monitor Temperatures in BIOS: t

2. RAM Issues

Given that your hardware diagnostics froze during the memory test, RAM might indeed be at fault, especially if it's failing intermittently due to overheating.

Testing RAM:

Reseat the RAM: I

Test RAM with MemTest86: If you have access to a bootable USB drive, you can use MemTest86 to perform a deeper memory test:

  1. Download MemTest86 from here.
  2. Create a bootable USB with MemTest86.
  3. Boot from the USB and run MemTest86 to check for memory errors.
  4. If any errors show up, you might need to replace the RAM.

Run a RAM Test via BIOS:

3. Check the Hard Drive

Since the hard drive passed the diagnostics, it seems less likely that the hard drive is the issue. However, just to be thorough:

  • Run CHKDSK: If you have access to another PC, you can run CHKDSK to scan your laptop’s hard drive for errors:
    1. Remove the hard drive and connect it to another PC using a USB-to-SATA adapter (or use an external hard drive enclosure).
    2. On the other PC, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:Replace X: with the actual drive letter. chkdsk X: /f

4. System Restore or Reset

You tried a factory reset via Windows Settings, but if the reset process didn't fully go through or the OS is too corrupted, it could fail. A System Restore might help if you have restore points set up before the issue started:

Access Advanced Startup Options: Since you have difficulty booting into Windows, try to get to Advanced Startup (by pressing F11 on boot or using a Windows recovery USB).

Perform a System Restore:

  1. Once in the Advanced Startup Options menu, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
  2. Choose a restore point before the issue started and let the system restore itself.

Fresh Windows Install: If System Restore doesn’t work, consider reinstalling Windows. You can download the latest version of Windows 10 using the Windows Media Creation Tool and install it fresh.

5. Blue Screen or Freeze During Boot

This could be related to:  Corrupted Boot Files: Running Startup Repair from the Advanced Startup Options can help repair boot files:

  1. Access Advanced Startup by pressing F11.
  2. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.

Driver Issues: If the blue screen is related to a specific driver, you could also try booting into Safe Mode to uninstall or roll back any problematic drivers:

  1. Press Shift + F8 during boot to access Safe Mode.
  2. Once in Safe Mode, go to Device Manager and uninstall any recent drivers that might have caused issues.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I checked if the dust and cooling is the issue, it doesnt seem so. I already reapplied thermal paste last year for the overheating issue. I booted the laptop in the fridge to see if its related to heating but its not...

The memory test in bios freezes at "Starting Memory Test" and it doesn't start no matter how much i wait. I tried reseating the rams, didnt work. The MemTest86 doesnt work as it freezes too after a few seconds. I did the extensive harddrive test and it passed but i don't have another pc to check it on. I can't access advanced startup or automatic repair because they freeze too. I tried reinstalling windows with media creation tool but it froze yet again. I tried safe boot but it just freezes.
