Microsoft Windows 11

Hi coffee spill on my laptop, area over the space button mostly affected. Now when I try to boot, the fan runs faster than normal, the hard drive doesn't turn on and there screen is just blank, the capslock light responds though. I am wondering should I change the motherboard or buy  a new laptop.

@Katleho342, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the Hp 250 G8 Notebook.

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution. We hope our assistance has been helpful!

Spilling liquid on a laptop, especially over the keyboard area, can cause serious issues. Here's how to troubleshoot and attempt to resolve the problems you're experiencing:

  1. Immediate Actions:

    • Power Off: Turn off the laptop immediately if it's still on to avoid further damage.
    • Unplug Everything: Disconnect the power adapter and any other connected peripherals.
    • Remove the Battery: If possible, remove the battery. Note: The HP 250 G8 model does not have a removable battery, so you might need professional assistance to do this safely.
  2. Dry the Laptop:

    • Invert the Laptop: Carefully turn your laptop upside down to prevent more liquid from reaching critical components.
    • Absorb Excess Liquid: Use a lint-free cloth or absorbent paper to soak up as much liquid as possible.
    • Allow to Air-dry: Leave the laptop in a tent position (open, upside down) to let gravity pull residual liquid away from the internal components. Let it dry for 24-48 hours.
  3. Check for Residual Damage:

    • Inspect for Corrosion: After drying, check the keyboard and internal components for corrosion or sticky residue. This often causes the keyboard or other components to malfunction.
    • Partial Disassembly: If you are comfortable and have experience with electronics, you may open the laptop to inspect the internal components. However, this is typically recommended to be done by a professional. The keyboard might need to be replaced if damaged by the liquid.
  4. Testing Hardware:

    • Check HDD and RAM: Ensure both the hard drive and RAM are seated correctly in their slots. Unmount and remount them.
    • BIOS and Components: Check if the BIOS is accessible by restarting the laptop and pressing the F10 key. If the BIOS screen doesn't appear, the hardware might be damaged.
  5. Professional Repair:

    • Given the complexity and potential for further damage, consider taking the laptop to an HP-authorized service center or professional repair technician. They can perform a more thorough inspection and cleaning, and potentially replace damaged components.

I hope this helps!

Take care and have an amazing day!
