Hello,

I am attempting to troubleshoot my boot failure on my laptop due to a memory failure (indicated by caps lock flashing 3 long, 2 short).

I have attempted a hard reset, reconnecting the battery, and reinstalling the RAM, as well as attempting a CMOS reset which seems to be impossible.

Any advice on how to troubleshoot further?

Hi @TiredEuropean,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your laptop!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like you're dealing with a memory module issue on your HP laptop. Since you've already tried some basic steps like a hard reset and reseating the RAM, here are additional troubleshooting measures to consider:

You can start by testing the RAM sticks one at a time. If your laptop has two RAM modules, remove one and attempt to boot. If it doesn’t work, swap the modules and try again. This will help determine if one of the RAM sticks is faulty.

Next, try switching the RAM slots. If your laptop has more than one slot, insert the RAM into a different one. A damaged slot can also cause this issue.

If possible, borrow a compatible, working RAM module and test it in your laptop. If the laptop boots successfully, the original RAM might need replacement.

Sometimes dust or corrosion on the RAM's gold contacts can create problems. Carefully clean the contacts with a soft eraser or a microfiber cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol.

Double-check all connections. Ensure that the RAM is properly seated in its slot. Also, if your laptop has removable storage drives like an SSD or HDD, disconnect and reconnect them to rule out loose connections.

If feasible, try resetting the BIOS. Remove the battery and unplug the charger. Hold down the power button for 30–60 seconds to discharge any residual power. Then reconnect the battery and charger, and attempt to power it on.

If the laptop manages to power on briefly, press F2 repeatedly to access HP Hardware Diagnostics. Run a Memory Test to see if there are any specific errors with the RAM.

Let me know how these steps go or if you need further guidance! 😊
