My Victus 15 laptop keeps crashing, multiple times a day. When I go to the reliability monitor it says “windows stopped working” and “windows was not properly shut down,” both are listed as critical events and the device restarts every time this occurs.

Hi @7JohnathanH

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for laying this out so clearly—it’s genuinely frustrating when your system crashes without warning, especially multiple times a day. The messages in Reliability Monitor (“Windows stopped working” and “Windows was not properly shut down”) suggest unexpected kernel-level failures, often tied to driver instability, firmware conflicts, or power delivery issues.

Let’s walk through a structured recovery plan to stabilize your HP Victus 15.

Step-by-Step Fix for Frequent Windows Crashes

1. Run HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics

This checks for faults in RAM, SSD, and system board.

  • Power off the laptop
  • Press Esc repeatedly during startup, then select F2
  • Run the Extensive Test on memory and storage
  • Reference: HP UEFI Diagnostics Guide

2. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

Outdated firmware can cause system-level crashes.

  • Visit the HP Victus 15 Driver Page
  • Download and install the latest:
    • BIOS update
    • Intel chipset driver
    • Intel Management Engine Interface
    • Storage controller (RST or AHCI)

3. Perform a Clean Boot

This disables third-party services that may conflict with system processes.

  • Press Win + R, type msconfig
  • Under Services, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all
  • Under Startup, open Task Manager and disable all items
  • Restart and observe system stability

4. Check for Corrupted System Files

Use SFC and DISM to repair Windows core components.

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  • Run:sfc /scannow
  • Then:DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

5. Review Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer

Look for recurring faulting modules or drivers.

  • Press Win + X > Event Viewer
  • Navigate to Windows Logs > System
  • Filter for Critical and Error entries around crash times
  • Pay attention to entries involving ntoskrnl.exe, kernel-power, or ACPI

6. Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup can cause instability during boot and shutdown cycles.

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup

I’m truly sorry this has disrupted your work—it’s exhausting when a system behaves unpredictably. Let’s get your Victus back to stable, reliable performance.
