When attached to an external monitor via HDMI, the display intermittently disconnects then reconnects.  The display is a Gigabyte Aorus FV43U monitor.  I am using a certified High Speed HDMI cable (5FT).  The resolution is set to 3840x2160 at 144HZ.  I have the latest drivers for the RTX4090 and have even tried a clean install of the drivers.  This seems to happen both when Optimus is enabled or set to GPU only mode.  Happens when both under load (Gaming) or when idle at desktop.

Another note to add, I notice it happens when attaching or removing a USB interface as well.

Would love any troubleshooting advice for this issue.

@mdomanic, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding external display!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

The issue of an external display intermittently disconnecting when attached via HDMI could be related to several factors, including cable quality, system settings, or hardware compatibility. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Troubleshooting Steps:

Check HDMI Cable and Connections:

  • Ensure that the HDMI cable is securely connected to both the monitor and the laptop.
  • Try using a different HDMI cable, preferably one with an even higher quality or shorter length to rule out cable issues.

Adjust Graphics Settings:

  • Ensure the resolution and refresh rate settings are correct and supported by both the monitor and the graphics card. Double-check that 3840x2160 at 144Hz is a supported mode for your setup.
  • Lower the refresh rate (e.g., try 120Hz) as a test to see if it stabilizes the connection and then gradually increase it back up.

Update Drivers and BIOS:

  • Confirm that all system drivers, especially the graphics drivers, are up-to-date. Since you've done a clean install, ensuring this is the latest version is a good step.
  • Update the laptop's BIOS to the latest version available on HP's website. Sometimes BIOS updates address hardware compatibility issues.

Check Power Settings:

  • Ensure your power settings are not causing the laptop to enter a low-power state that might impact HDMI functionality. This can typically be adjusted in the power settings menu.

Monitor Settings:

  • Consult the monitor’s settings to ensure that it does not have any energy-saving features or refresh rate settings that may be causing the disconnections.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
