OMEN by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop 16-k0000 (665B3AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi

I have had the OMEN Gaming Laptop 16-k0033dx since 2021; however since 2 years ago I started to face problems charging it. At the beginning, I thought it was the charger, because after some time, the charger stopped working. I bought another one (which is expensive, given that the Laptop is a gamer laptop), but after less than 1 year of using it, the charger exploded and stopped working. Now that two laptop chargers have failed, I suspect it is a computer defect. What can be done to my laptop to solve this issue and be sure that no more laptop chargers are going to explode?

Thank you

Hi @Sas_J,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out to us. We’re truly sorry to hear about the persistent charging issues you’ve experienced with your OMEN Gaming Laptop. We understand how concerning and even alarming it must have felt when a charger failed. Your safety and experience with HP products matter deeply to us.

Let’s walk together through the steps that can help bring your device back to peak performance and restore your peace of mind.

Step 1: Update the BIOS (Firmware)

Updating your BIOS can optimize hardware performance and may address potential power regulation issues.

To update the BIOS:

  1. Visit the official HP support page:
👉 OMEN Gaming Laptop 16-k0033dx (74S79UA) Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support
  2. Under “Driver – BIOS,” download the latest BIOS update.
  3. Follow the on-screen installation instructions carefully.
⚠️ Important: Ensure the laptop is plugged into power during this process. Do not interrupt the update.

Step 2: Perform a Battery and Power Reset

  1. Shut down the laptop.
  2. Unplug the charger and remove any peripherals (USBs, etc.).
  3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain residual power.
  4. Plug in your charger and turn the laptop back on.

This simple step can reset the power management system.

Step 3: Update Chipset & Power Drivers

  1. Return to the HP support page for your model.
  2. Download the latest:
    • Intel Chipset Installation Utility
    • Power Management drivers
  3. Install both and restart your laptop.

These updates ensure that your system correctly manages energy flow between components.

Step 4: Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  1. Press Esc repeatedly as the laptop starts > Press F2 to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  2. Select Component Tests > Power > AC Adapter and run the test.

This will check if the laptop is overloading or miscommunicating with the charger.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
