Microsoft Windows 11

I currently am using an omen 16 and my laptop restarts randomly. At the start it only happened very sporadically but the last few weeks it's started to happen quite often. It appears to only happen when I'm playing a certain game. All the drivers are up to date and never any error messages.

Hi @Banezy,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Random restarts, especially during gaming, can be frustrating. Let's troubleshoot this.

  • Check Temperatures: High temperatures can cause sudden restarts. Use monitoring software to check your CPU and GPU temperatures while gaming. If they're too high (above 90°C), it might be a cooling issue.
  • Power Supply: Ensure that your power supply is working properly. Faulty power delivery can cause sudden shutdowns.
  • Update BIOS: Sometimes, BIOS updates can address stability issues. Check HP's website for any BIOS updates for your model and install them if available.
  • Graphics Settings: Lower the graphics settings in the game and see if it still restarts. If it doesn't, your laptop might be struggling with the game's demands.
  • Event Viewer: Check Windows Event Viewer for any critical errors or warnings logged around the time of the restart. This might give clues about the cause.
  • Memory Test: Run a memory diagnostic test. Faulty RAM can cause random restarts.
  • Power Settings: Make sure your power settings are set to High Performance. Sometimes, laptops can restart if they're not getting enough power during intensive tasks.
  • Background Applications: Close unnecessary background applications while gaming. Sometimes, conflicts between applications can cause instability.
  • Update Game: Ensure your game is up to date. Sometimes, game bugs can cause unexpected behavior.
  • Reinstall Game: If the issue persists only with a specific game, try reinstalling it. Corrupted game files can cause crashes.
  • Hardware Check: Run hardware diagnostics provided by HP. This can help identify if there are any hardware issues with your laptop.

Start with these steps and see if any of them help resolve the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
