Hello Community,

Often not able to play games with this high end gaming laptop as the trigger to graphics switch makes this laptop hang forever.

Graphics switching using omen gaming hub software itself is not working.

What I tried: By default, igpu is selected then used graphics switcher in omen gaming hub, then opened nvidia advanced Optimus option then selected nvidia under laptop display mode dialog.

Observation: There is a device plugin sound then sooner there is device disconnection sound along with short blackscreen in display. Nvidia gpu switch from intel gpu is not working.

Since long facing graphics switcher issue, so I used hp cloud recovery tool and prepared usb device. Then did secure erase option in bios to erase ssd. Then installed from usb device. Windows 11 including optional, hp support assistant, Microsoft play store - all are up to date.

But still graphics switcher problem exists.

HP phone support team are very busy sending Business hours ended message during business hours without providing solutions, which means they are just ignoring issues reported. I know now that I did a huge mistake selecting this HP brand.

Based on this experience and frustration, I am posting here hoping to get support from community people.

Laptop model: HP omen max 16 rtx 5080 intel ultra 9 275hx

Product: B88QNEA

Hi @Omen_max_user

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

Thank you for sharing the detailed steps you’ve already taken. I understand how frustrating it must be to face repeated issues with graphics switching on your OMEN MAX 16. Please note that the graphics switcher relies on both the OMEN Gaming Hub and NVIDIA Advanced Optimus functionality, and any interruption in driver or firmware communication can cause the symptoms you described.

Since you have already performed a secure erase and clean installation with HP Cloud Recovery, the next step is to confirm that both the Intel iGPU and NVIDIA GPU are properly recognized in Device Manager and that the latest drivers from HP Support Assistant are installed. I would request you to please follow the steps:

Update GPU Drivers

  • Outdated or corrupted drivers can prevent GPU mode switching.
  • Open GeForce Experience (NVIDIA) or AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition
  • Check for latest driver updates
  • Install updates and restart system
  • Verify GPU mode switching after update

Run Windows Update

  • Windows updates often include GPU compatibility fixes.
  • Go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update
  • Click Check for updates
  • Install all pending updates
  • Restart system after installation

Reset OMEN Gaming Hub

  • Corrupted Gaming Hub settings can block GPU mode changes.
  • Open OMEN Gaming Hub → Settings → Reset to Defaults
  • Reset all Gaming Hub settings
  • Reconfigure GPU mode preferences
  • Test switching again

Check BIOS Graphics Settings

  • BIOS may override GPU mode switching if misconfigured.
  • Restart → Press F10 to enter BIOS
  • Navigate to Advanced → Graphics/Display settings
  • Ensure both GPUs are enabled
  • Save changes and exit

Verify GPUs in Device Manager

  • Ensures both integrated and discrete GPUs are detected.
  • Right‑click Start → Device Manager → Display adapters
  • Confirm both Intel/NVIDIA or AMD GPUs are listed
  • If one is missing, reinstall drivers or update BIOS

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello,

Please read my post very carefully again and understand the matter before replying.

GPU mode is not persistent after restart.

Both display adapter is detected in device manager.

As I mentioned in the post, I have already performed hp cloud recovery resets and updated all softwares, drivers, everything,..

The HP cloud recovery software is provided by HP company. If you are saying that any interruption in driver or firmware can cause graphics switch issue, then

Who is providing that faulty HP cloud recovery software? and faulty Updates ?
Who should fix that ?

Are you expecting me to analyze and fix in HP cloud recovery software? Or in HP Software updates?

Bought this laptop 1 year ago and still doing issue analysis, multiple hp cloud recovery resets, reinstallation and I am not able to use this laptop for my purposes.

I have always trusted HP for product quality and service. However, my experience over the past year has led me to reconsider that trust, as both the product performance and the service support have been disappointing.

Hi @Omen_max_user

Thank you for responding.

I understand that you are reporting that your HP Omen Max 16 gaming laptop frequently freezes when switching between the integrated Intel GPU and the dedicated NVIDIA RTX 5080 GPU. Despite performing a complete factory recovery, secure SSD erase, and installing all Windows, HP, and Microsoft updates, the graphics switching issue persists and prevents reliable gaming. I would request you to please follow the steps:

Stop using Omen Gaming Hub for GPU switching

  • Open OMEN Gaming Hub → Graphics Switcher
  • Turn OFF any “automatic switching” or “hybrid mode control”
  • Close Omen Gaming Hub completely (it can conflict with NVIDIA Optimus)

Many modern HP Omen systems behave better when GPU mode is controlled by Windows/NVIDIA instead of HP software.

2. Switch GPU mode inside NVIDIA Control Panel only

  • Right-click desktop → NVIDIA Control Panel
  • Go to Manage Display Mode / Set Advanced Optimus
  • Choose:
    • NVIDIA GPU only (dGPU mode) for gaming stability

If this works, keep it in dGPU mode permanently for testing.

3. Reinstall clean NVIDIA drivers

  • Download latest NVIDIA driver (clean version)
  • Use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) in Safe Mode:
    • Remove Intel + NVIDIA drivers completely
  • Reinstall:
    1. Intel Graphics driver first ( https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers  )
    2. Then NVIDIA driver

Driver mismatch is a very common cause of “black screen + disconnect sound” loops

Hello,

As I said, GPU mode is not persistent after restart . Already disabled drr and tried switching graphics using nvidia app or nvidia control panel or omen gaming hub. So it doesn’t matter which way I used to switch graphics from intel to nvidia. After restart , I hear device plugin sound and then short black screen in display and device plug out sound. Checking the mode I see its changed to Auto.

Graphics switch is impossible when drr is enabled.

I think whoever bought this laptop first during the launch time will have this issue. I see there are two variants (one first launched with synaptic touch pad and further laptops are with elan touch pad). You guys definitely aware of this and also might have information about hardware issues in this synaptic variant.

You are responsible to recall the laptops in case of hardware issues if exists in synaptic variant.

Could you verify whether the Synaptic Variant laptop which was released first is affected by any hardware-related defects ?
