Hello everyone,

I am experiencing a severe issue with my HP Victus laptop, which has unfortunately just run out of warranty. The laptop suffers from the well-known, chronic Hall sensor defect that many Victus users have frequently reported online.

 

 

The screen randomly goes completely black or the laptop suddenly goes into sleep mode while I am actively using it (gaming or working).

 

Sometimes it stays stuck on a black screen even though the keyboard backlight and fans are running, indicating it fails to wake up properly.

 

The issue is clearly related to the lid detection/magnetic Hall sensor, as gently flexing the chassis or moving the display back and forth temporarily triggers or resets the blackout.

 

My warranty has recently expired, I would like to know how HP officially handles this known chronic issue outside of the warranty period.

What’s Happening with the Hall Sensor

The Hall sensor in your laptop is responsible for detecting lid position (open/closed). When it malfunctions, it can cause:

  • Screen flickering
  • False sleep triggers
  • Complete power failure
  • Throttled CPU performance if the sensor is disabled by service centers

Multiple users have reported that HP’s common service response is to disconnect the Hall sensor cable, which disables lid detection and limits CPU wattage to 40–45W, resulting in ~50% performance loss[1].

Can You Fix This Yourself?

Unfortunately, there is no safe or documented DIY fix for the Hall sensor issue that restores full functionality without risking further damage. The sensor is embedded in the lid assembly or motherboard, and tampering with it may void your warranty or worsen the issue.

 

However, here are a few things you can try:

1. BIOS and Firmware Update

Sometimes BIOS updates include sensor calibration fixes.

  • Visit the HP Victus 16-s0000 support page
  • Download and install the latest BIOS, chipset, and firmware updates

2. Disable Lid Sleep Actions Temporarily

This may reduce flickering if the sensor is intermittently misfiring.

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does
  • Set “Do nothing” for both battery and plugged-in modes

Why DIY Repair Isn’t Recommended

  • The Hall sensor is not user-replaceable.
  • Disabling it manually may require motherboard disassembly.
  • Performance throttling is hardcoded in firmware when the sensor is disconnected.
