OMEN by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-wf1000 (8X3Y6AV)

Hello,

I recently purchased my new Omen 16 with an Intel 14700 processor. After adjusting the power settings and disabling Turbo Boost, I achieved some pretty good temperatures (they were quite high before).

However, after updating some drivers, I've noticed that the motherboard temperature has risen significantly. With the laptop at idle, it reaches up to 90 degrees. My previous Omen laptop did not have such high PCH temperatures. I assume these chips can handle that, but it's not healthy for the laptop to reach such high temperatures while idle.

Do you have any solutions or recommendations to improve this situation?

Thank you!

Hi Elohi_NR

I have tried everything you mentioned, and unfortunately, it hasn't worked for me.

I have conducted numerous tests with various versions of Windows 11, and as of today, October 10, 2024, I have discovered that the issue stems directly from version 24h2 of Windows 11.

After installing Windows 11 24h2 cleanly, I noticed that this version causes an increase in the temperature solely of the motherboard, even on other machines.

My solution was to install Windows 11 23h2, and the motherboard temperature returned to normal.

It would be great if HP researchers could investigate this issue or incompatibility with the HP OMEN 16.

Best regards

Hi @Magia0328,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

It must be concerning to see your new Omen laptop reaching such high temperatures, especially after adjusting the power settings and already experiencing improvements before. I understand how worrisome this can be for the health of your system, and I’m here to help you look into it further.

A few questions to get a better understanding:

  1. Did the temperature increase happen right after updating specific drivers, or was there a gap between the update and noticing the high temps?
  2. Are you noticing any performance issues, like slower processing or fan noise, in addition to the higher motherboard temperatures?

Here are a few steps you can try to address the issue:

Check for Background Processes: Open Task Manager and look for any background processes using excessive CPU or GPU resources, which could cause the laptop to run hotter, even at idle.

Reinstall the Updated Drivers: Sometimes, driver updates can cause conflicts. Try reinstalling the drivers you updated (especially chipset or power management drivers) or rolling back to the previous versions to see if it resolves the temperature issue.

Reset Power Settings: Restore your power settings to default and then reapply the adjustments you made previously. Sometimes, a driver update can override certain custom settings, so resetting and tweaking them again may help.

Monitor Fan Speeds: Use a tool like HWMonitor or OMEN Command Center to check if the fan speeds are functioning correctly and increasing as the temperature rises. If the fans are not ramping up properly, they may need to be adjusted.

Update BIOS: Make sure your BIOS is up to date, as this could improve temperature management and overall system stability. Click here to update.

Hi @Elohi_NR,

Thank you for your recommendations. Yesterday, I contacted HP support and was pleasantly surprised by the excellent service I received. I granted access to my computer, and they performed all the tests you mentioned, including a BIOS update. Although they didn’t solve my problem, it was evident that the hardware is in perfect condition.

Today, I decided to boot Windows from a USB using Hiren's Boot, and the temperature tests showed very low readings, at 25 degrees Celsius or less. This confirms that the issue is caused by the software. I’m still unsure if it’s related to Windows 24H2 or some driver for the laptop. I will soon reinstall the operating system from scratch to try to resolve the issue.

Hi @Magia0328 ,

Let's try Bios defaults and if that does not work we may have to do a recovery.

Click here to Restore defaults in BIOS

Before proceeding with the recovery process, make sure you back up the data.

Click here for the recovery process. Once done we have to see how it responds.

Keep me posted for further assistance.
