Hi guys,
So, to summarize it, I just got the HP Pavilion 15-bc414nq and its really a great machine with great value for money with 8gb ram and a 4gb gtx 1050 and a decent i5 8250u (low voltage but powerful enough). The question is really about the future instead of the present:
Is this machine mxm compatible? I see some of the pavilions come with gtx1060. Instead of buying another laptop in 2-3 years maybe there is a way to just move to a gtx1060 and throw another 8gb of ram.
Any insight into this is greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

Ah ha. OK thanks for that... smh.
Here is the manual for that series... http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05955459
First off, there are very few laptops in the world that you could ever change the GPU in. Yours is not one of them.
Specs say it will only take up to 8GB of memory. Although this may or may not be true as I have discovered in the past.
But if its true, you would be out the cost of the ram stick. I would just stay with what is there and consider it a lesson learned. Next time you will know more of what to look for in a laptop a few years from now.
Im sorry.

You sure about that model number? Its pulling up a gaming monitor for me. Not the same thing you are describing.

Wow, thanks for the heads up Photoray, it seems in the product section it returns the monitor, and in the driver section as well but it has the picture of the laptop and correct drivers:
Its weird that after I type the product number it autocompletes HP Pavilion but takes me to HP pro-display...
Link to the seller, maybe they got the wrong model number?
Thank you for the support 🙂

Thanks a bunch PhotoRay. Thats exactly what I was looking for.
On the long run I guess it was just a nice to have more than anything else because either way a new RAM and a possible MXM update wouldve probably been very costly and not worth the effort. I guess I thought the ram update wouldve been possible because there is as far as I know just 1 RAM installed and a slot open, usually manufacturers go dual channel if they hit the maximum RAM so I just assumed (wrongly) that I could do it.
Either way just to review it after Ive been able to use it a bit most new games run smoothly on 720p and 1080p (I prefer higher FPS rather than res) with an avg of 50-60 fps on high settings. GPU is set on balanced and no MSI Afterburner enabled, I experienced with a minor OC of2-3% and settings on performance a boost of 10% on benchmarks was noticed and it could hit up to 20% more with a bit more GPU settings tweak and slightly higher OC. Additional cooling is not a must but it improves FPS with about 10%. Display is not the best but very good for most purposes.
So overall a solid bang for the buck 10/10 for the value to performance ratio. Its safe to bet that in 2 years time it will still have avg FPS of above 30 for AAA games, and either way bumping game settings to medium or low will assure playable FPS for at least 3-4 years from now.
