HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ec0028ax
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My machine became painfully slow after updating BIOS and SSD firmware. It is HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ec0028ax with AMD Ryzen 3750H, 8GB RAM, AMD Radeon Vega 2GB integrated graphics card, NVIDIA RTX 2650 GPU, and runs on Windows 10 (64 bit) 20H2.

Presently, the machine is so slow that it takes nearly a second to register a key press or a mouse click. Waiting time for normal program to open is painfully long. Videos take forever to load and run. I can't even run Excel or Word! However, CPU is loaded just about 17% and 8GB memory is loaded around 50%.

BIOS was updated to F 12 version on 03 Mar 21, and SSD firmware was updated to 15.12.0.0 on 06 Mar 21. The issues started after the latter.  I tried to rollback BIOS, but HP BIOS update tool only provides an option to update the BIOS and not to rollback. I rolled back the firmware, but that did not change anything.  I tried to run ant-virus (McAfee) and it goes on for ever, and does not detect anything. I updated the AMD chipset driver, and nothing changed. As a last ditch effort I uninstalled Windows and reinstalled it. Other than losing sleep, I did not gain anything.

Ran HP Diagnostics tools for both hardware and OS. Nothing found.

I have a lot of heavy analytics work to do with the machine, and I find no way out.

Can anyone please help?

HI@geo123abram,

Welcome to HP Community!

Let's start with performing a hard reset on the PC to release any excessive static/power that could have caused the issue.

  • Turn off the computer.
  • Disconnect all external connected peripheral devices such as USB storage devices, external displays, and printers.
  • Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.
  • Press and hold down the Power button for about 15 seconds to drain any residual electrical charge from the capacitors that protect the memory.
  • Press the Power button to turn on the computer.
  • If a startup menu opens, use the arrow keys to select Start Windows Normally, and then press the Enter key.

Second, you can check if there is Bios update available for your PC, here is the link to download.

Performing a test on the Hard drive as well as on the Memory from the Hardware diagnostics:

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
  3. On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.
  4. Click Extensive Test.
  5. Click Run once, or Loop until error.
While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component are shown on the screen. The test can take 2 or more hours to complete.

   NOTE:

If the diagnostics are not available when using the F2 menu, run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics from a USB drive. To download the latest version of the diagnostics, go to the HP Hardware Diagnostics website. For instructions, see Testing from an external USB device.
