I have an HP Omen 15-Ce073tx 2017 Model, I recently got a 1070 GPU from a friend who is travelling out of the country.

I wanted to know is there an easy way to use it as an external GPU? I am not sure if my model has the thunderbolt port or not.

Please do advise the best possible way to use it as it is a spare part that i dont want to waste.

Thank you!

There were a select few according to the maintenance manual that had TB on the left side.

If yours has that icon next to the USB-C port, then you are good to go and the HP Specs page is wrong. It wont be the first time a specs page was incorrect.

Hello @EazyBait

No, not on that model of Omen. External GPU setups require Thunderbolt and your systems USB-C port only supports USB and Displayport.

Rather than let that GTX 1070 go to waste as you say, you could always sell it perhaps?

@Photoray002,

Thank you for your prompt response.

I have been doing research since the past 24 hours and i thought basis the below links that the laptop is actually equipped with the thunderbolt port. The lighting sign is present next to the port and the Amazon link (where i bought it from) and the other link say they are equipped with it.

The graphic card was pretty expensive and here in india i am not even getting 1/4 of the price i bought it for.

So even though, i am sure you have your information right just for a final confirmation, are sure i cant use it for an eGPU? 😛

Im going off of the HP specs page for your model... https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/omen-by-hp-15-ce000-laptop-pc-series/15551437/model/17252098/do...

The Notebook check page you refered to is for the ce002ng, not the model you said you have.

If you have a USB C port on the left side of the case and it has a lightning bolt sign next to the USB C port, the HP specs page is wrong.

But If your USB C port is on the back of the case, there will be no Thunderbolt enabled USB C port, only USB enabled.

Wohoo, Awesome. Thanks!

Now how do i test it if the TB is working fine with minimum investment at first and what all equipment do i need to get the eGPU working once i have tested that TB is actually working!?

Thanks for everything sir !

I don't have a machine with a Thunderbolt port, but I think it should show the Thunderbolt Controller under System Devices in the Device Manager.

To properly test the port, you would need to connect something that uses Thunderbolt. If a tech shop is near by, perhaps they could do that for you?

To add an external GPU to your laptop, you would need an eGPU setup to install the card with like the Omen Accelerator. ITs pricey to do this. If you absolutely have to have the GTX 1070 for gaming, OK. Otherwise your 1060 should do fine.
