Pavillion 17-cd0024na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have just received one of the new Pavillion 17" laptops 17-cd0024na. Just before the purchase I had thought of upgrading my old machine with a 1TB SSD - but as that could not be updated to Win 10 I purchased this new one. How do I go about replacing the 1TB hard drive in this new machine with the SSD - the user guide is quite basic does not cover it and its not obvious how to access the bay. Thanks

Hello @JoIkarus

The Maintenance manual is what you want to look at. Page 33 gives complete instructions on how to add/remove the hard drive. Yes, you can replace the HDD with a Sata 2.5 inch SSD.

There is no need to reinstall the operating system because its already installed on the 250GB M.2 SSD.

If you have issues with it booting for some reason due to the HDD being replaced, you would want to use HP USB Recovery Media that you will need to create before you do any upgrading of hardware.

To do this, you will need a blank 16GB USB pen drive to create the recovery with. Then make the recovery media and keep it on hand if something ever goes wrong.

To create the recovery, go to Start/HP Help and Support/HP Recovery Manager and run it with the USB drive already plugged in. Follow the prompts.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Thanks that was so helpful. "Ripping" the back cover off when its held on by clips as well as screws is always nerve jangling! Otherwise it was very easy. I see the manual file was 18MB - I optimised it with Foxit Phantom and its now 2MB. As soon as I get an hour or so I'll make the recovery disk/USB  Regards Jo
