Hello.

Since last spring approximately I started having problems on my HP OMEN 16 which wasn't even 1 year old. During gaming the screen started flickering and the PC went into the start screen, sometimes hard stopping the game. I addressed this issue at first by lowering the max FPS on a game to 60 and it worked at first. Then the problem persisted and spread to other tasks like watching YouTube or TV shows. It came to a peak this week when it just didn't go back to the start screen for hours and when it did, it worked for some minutes and did it again. It didn't even respond to pushing the power button... Now I managed to get it to a Reinstall Windows screen and tried to do that. It had some flickering during the process but now the screen is just black, with the fans still turning.

Can you please advise me on the steps to do, because I saw a similar issue from other users multiple times on the Internet and seemingly there are different solutions (I tried reinstalling, it's not helping)

Thank you !

Hi @timarakhov,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for the detailed description. This sounds like a hardware-level issue, possibly involving the GPU, display cable, or motherboard, especially since it's now affecting basic system functions and persists even after a Windows reinstall.

Let’s go step-by-step to isolate and potentially resolve it:

Step 1: Check for Signs of Life

Since the screen is black, but the fans are spinning:

  • Do you see any backlight glow on the screen?
  • Try shining a flashlight at an angle. If you see faint images, the display backlight may have failed.
  • Connect to an external monitor via HDMI or USB-C:
    • If the external display works, the issue is likely with the laptop screen or cable.
    • If both are black, it’s likely a GPU or motherboard issue.

Step 2: Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Disconnect the charger.
  2. Hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  3. Plug in the charger and try powering on again.

If the laptop has a reset pinhole (usually near the vents), use a paperclip to press it for 10 seconds.

Step 3: Try BIOS Restore

  1. Power off the laptop.
  2. Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold Power for 2–3 seconds.
  3. Release Power, but keep holding Windows + B for 10 seconds.
    • This should trigger BIOS recovery if available.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
