Since this morning, after turning on my laptop, I have been hearing some unusual noises. The sound does not seem to be coming from the fans, but I’m concerned about what might be causing it. Could you please help me identify the possible source and how to fix it?

@Saharomen15, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're hearing unusual sounds from your HP laptop after startup, and I’ll be happy to help you troubleshoot this.

Step 1: Identify the Type of Sound

First, let’s try to narrow down the nature of the sound:

  • Clicking or ticking: Could indicate a failing hard drive (if your laptop has an HDD).
  • Whirring or grinding: Might be a fan or optical drive initializing.
  • Beeping: Could be a BIOS error code.
  • Buzzing or electrical noise: Might be coil whine or speaker interference.

If possible, try to record the sound and note when it occurs (e.g., during boot, idle, or under load).

Step 2: Basic Hardware Checks

Check for Loose Components

  1. Power off the laptop and unplug it.
  2. Gently shake the laptop to check for any loose internal parts.
  3. If you're comfortable, remove the bottom panel (if accessible) and inspect for dust or debris near the fan or speakers.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

HP provides built-in diagnostics to check for hardware issues:

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  3. Run the Component Tests for:
    • Hard Drive
    • Fan
    • Audio
    • System Board

Step 3: Update BIOS and Drivers

Outdated firmware or drivers can sometimes cause strange behavior.

  1. Visit the HP Support Website - Official HP® Support
  2. Enter your laptop’s model number.
  3. Download and install the latest:
    • BIOS
    • Chipset drivers
    • Audio drivers

Step 4: Additional Troubleshooting

  • Disable Fast Startup (Windows):
    1. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
    2. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
    3. Uncheck Turn on fast startup and save changes.
  • Check Event Viewer for any system errors during startup.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
