HP Laptop - 17-by3006tu

I have a HP Omen 17 Laptop that is freezing regularly.  It stays frozen for 3 to 5 minutes, then starts working for a while before freezing again.   Less regularly, the laptop does a thermal shutdown.

Having looked in Task Manager, I can see that the process Sysinfocap is using 20-30% of the CPU and 80-100% of the memory.  I strongly suspect this is cause of the problem.

My research indicates that Sysinfocap is a HP-specific process.

I've looked in this community and have seen quite a few people reporting the same issue (many mention Sysinfocap by name), but haven't seen a solution (either from HP or from a community member).

Has anyone found a solve for this issue?

Hi @Capcoincidence,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Yes, the Sysinfocap process is an HP-specific process used for system diagnostics and telemetry. High resource usage from this process can cause system freezing and even thermal shutdowns. Here are the steps to fix the issue on your HP Omen 17 Laptop:

1. End the Sysinfocap Process (Temporary Fix)

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Find Sysinfocap.exe in the Processes tab.
  3. Right-click it and select End Task.

Note: This will stop the process temporarily but won’t prevent it from restarting.

2. Disable Sysinfocap from Startup (Permanent Fix)

  1. Open Task Manager and go to the Startup tab.
  2. Look for Sysinfocap in the list.
  3. Right-click and choose Disable.
  4. Restart your laptop to apply changes.

3. Uninstall HP System Info Cap (If Available)

  1. Press Win + R, type appwiz.cpl, and press Enter.
  2. Find HP System Information or HP Support Assistant (it may be part of this).
  3. Click Uninstall and follow the prompts.

4. Update or Roll Back HP Software

  • Go to HP’s support website (support.hp.com) and check for BIOS, chipset, or driver updates.
  • If you started having issues after a recent update, try rolling back to an earlier version.

5. Check for Windows Updates

  1. Go to Settings > Windows Update and install any pending updates.
  2. Restart your laptop after updating.

6. Scan for Corrupt System Files

  1. Open Command Prompt (Admin) by searching cmd, then right-click and select Run as Administrator.
  2. Type: sfc /scannow
  3. Press Enter and wait for the scan to complete.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
