Victus by HP 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop 15-fa0000 (599K0AV)

My HP Victus laptop’s webcam only works in complete darkness. In normal lighting, it either doesn’t show any video or just a black screen. It flickers once and then turns off.

Steps I’ve Tried:

  • Updated and rolled back webcam drivers

  • Used HP Support Assistant & BIOS diagnostics (both passed)

  • Tried other apps like Zoom and OBS

  • Even in Safe Mode, the camera doesn't work properly

  • Only works when room is almost completely dark

Request:
Please guide me on fixing this. Is this a known issue with HP Victus laptops? Can I get older drivers or a firmware update? Is hardware service required?

@rohan17pawar, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It seems you're experiencing quite specific issues with your HP Victus laptop's webcam only working in conditions of low light. Here are some steps that can help further diagnose and potentially solve the issue:

Webcam Privacy Switch or Shutter Key:

  • Ensure that the webcam privacy switch or shutter key is not turned off. On select HP notebook models, these features can disable the webcam. Slide the webcam privacy switch or press the webcam shutter key to enable the webcam.

Adjust Webcam Settings:

  • Often, settings related to the brightness or exposure can affect video input. Check your webcam software settings to ensure they are not overly adjusted to only function in darkness.

Verify Webcam Accessibility:

  • Make sure applications have permission to access the camera.
  • For Windows 11: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and ensure camera access is enabled.
  • For Windows 10: Navigate to Settings > Privacy > Camera and adjust settings for applications to access the camera.

Uninstall & Reinstall Webcam Drivers:

  • Manually uninstall the webcam driver via Device Manager, and let Windows detect and reinstall them.
  • Go to Device Manager, locate your webcam under Imaging devices, right-click, and select "Uninstall device." Then, restart your machine. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.

Use Windows Update:

  • Ensure your system is up-to-date, as some updates may have fixes for hardware compatibility or drivers.
  • Search for Check for updates in Windows and install any available updates.

Test External Webcam:

  • If possible, test an external webcam to discern if the issue lies with the software settings or the internal webcam hardware.

HP Support Resources:

  • Revisit HP Support Assistant for any updates you might have missed.
  • Consult with HP Support for more intensive diagnostics that may require device-specific insights.

System Restore:

  • If the issue recently started and you had no problems before, consider using System Restore to revert to a time when your webcam was functioning properly.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
