Laptop "upgraded" by itself recently. Previously, my keyboard backlighting was on permanently - my preferred option. Since it "upgraded" the keyboard backlight turns off after about 30 seconds. Lights up again when a key is pressed... BUT I want it on continuously. Also, the indicator light on the F6 key (sound on/off) used to light up when sound was off. No longer. No light at all.
Have tried numerous suggestions on HP site - none have succeeded.

I too agree and demand an answer from the corporate pricks. It's getting REALLY old and stupid that our options as users for something simple like a **bleep** backlit option on a keyboard is constantly being fooked with by the engineers that either
A. Bury the setting in the **bleep** BIOS...
B. DON'T EVEN give us users an option in the BIOS but leave it to be controlled by Windblows...to which every time we apply a hack that changes the settings the next weekly update reverts it right back to what all of you BIG ASS CORPS think is the best solution for us. YOU ROB US OF OUR CHOICE! HOW DARE YOU! HOW FOOKING DARE YOU!
and finally (the worst) C. Divert and NEVER provide a practical solution in support when this question has been asked a bazillion **bleep** times over the years!
I have poor eyesight and need that backlit to even find the backlit button to push to illuminate the keyboard. But do I get that?! NOOOOOOOOO. I have to literally blindly push buttons to even find the fooking 'light switch'! At the very least I am calling you out HP that you are medically discriminating against some of us by forcing us to randomly push buttons and sometimes fook up our laptops trying to search for a **bleep** 'light switch'!!!
FOOK YOU BIG CORP! WE DEMAND PRACTICAL AND PRAGMATIC SOLUTIONS!

Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!
I see you are experiencing backlit keyboard issues with the HP Spectre Laptop. If the blacklight stays on for only a few seconds, the backlight timeout setting might need configuring in the BIOS.
I sincerely apologize for the Inconvenience. Going forward, we are going to take steps to ensure that this situation does not happen again.
I have a few recommendations
- Few computers offer the BIOS Advanced section.
- If there is not a setting for the backlight timing in the BIOS, this behavior might not be supported on the notebook. Unfortunately on few models the timeout on the backlit keyboard cannot be set to "never"
- For more settings click on this link
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Until an automatic "update" (read "dumbing down") of my system, my keyboard backlight was set to "always on", which is what I wanted. After the automatic dumbing down of my system, I lost the two indicator lights on F6 and F10, and the ability to keep my backlights always on. After a huge amount of time-wasting I managed to reinstall/reactivate the two orange indicator lights, but nowhere can I find a way to even change the time backlighting time. NONE of the suggestions actually take me to a backlight setting. I have tried so many "solutions" over the last few weeks that I can't even remember where the setting for the backlighting resides. I certainly isn't easy to find!!!
It seems to me that if HP offer a keyboard with backlighting, then access to the software/bios to control that feature should be easy to find and implement. BUT IT'S NOT! I don't care if the battery flattens more quickly if backlighting is always on - usually I'm located near a power point. IF I'm travelling and have no access to power, then I should be able to easily access the control to change the backlighting timeout.
NOT HAPPY, HP!

Thank you for responding,
I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. It seems like few models the timeout on the backlit keyboard cannot be set to "never". As we have limited support boundaries in the support community as of now. I would request you to contact our Support and our Support Engineers should be able to sort this out.
Please feel free to contact us here anytime you need any further assistance.
Have a great day!
