OMEN X by HP Laptop 17-ap0xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Info:

  • HP OMEN X 17 ap0xx
  • i7 7700HQ
  • GTX 1070

I just got an OMEN X 17 laptop, and I was wondering if I could overclock it. The option doesn't show up in the OMEN Command Center. Is this laptop unable to be overclocked, or is there some update I can install, BIOS option I can set, or program I can install to enable overclocking or at least some sort of boost?

The processor can not be overclocked.  The multiplier is not unlocked.  The processors that can be OC'd have a "K" in the model (i7-8700K), for instance.

That sucks. Is there any other setting to boost it, like a turbo mode or something? Can I do anything with the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility? And what about the graphics card? Can that be overclocked or boosted at all?

Thank you for the additional information, @sgern

What is the full model of the laptop.  I need this to review the specs.

I know that isn't what you wanted to hear, but you have to remember that laptops can only disipate so much heat and then they will get too hot.  There simply isn't much space inside of the cases.  This is why manufacturers use mobile processors and video cards.  I believe your processor as follows:  Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ (2.8 GHz base frequency, up to 3.8 GHz with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology, 6 MB cache, 4 cores).

You can always try using MSI Afterburner to see if the video card will OC, but as I stated, you have to be extremely cautious of HEAT!!  It is your enemy.  You can easily shorten the life of the components in the laptop.

My model number is 17-ap010nr. What does Intel Turbo Boost do? Does that automatically optimize performance based on what the computer is doing?

Thank you for the model number.

Yes, Turbo Boost automatically boosts the CPU performance when it is needed.  You can look at the FAQ's in the link that I provided.  I suggest that you download CPU-Z.  Watch the CPU Tab to see what is happening.

You might think its not cool (pun intended), but the 7700 doesnt always overclock that well for several.

In fact, Intel came out last year and basically told users to forget overclocking and leave em at stock. They even took the 7700 off their list of comparisons (as noted by another user on this forum).

As Geekster pointed out, you will only have heating issues anyway as Laptops dont handle heat the same way a desktop does.

Benchmarks look great on Youtube, but the small amount of FPS you will gain isnt worth the wear and tear on your system.

Good luck.

Adnotacja 2019-07-20 085030.pngtheres my omen's settings.

as u can see i lowered voltage on processor by 0.1v. tested. stabble. (1)

using Throttlestop 8.70 i turned off power boost (4) so my processor dont reach more than 2.3ghz. (2)

core multiplier does not work (nothing changes) (3)

Ill can try lower fsb somehow. the prob is bios sucks in omens. theres no advenced options like power to set voltages etc. i need to do all from windows level using programs.
