Victus by HP 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop 15-fb0000 (598U8AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with the built-in camera on my HP laptop. Whenever I try to open the Camera app it just gives me a blank/black screen and the camera light and screen switches on for a nano second and then goes back. This flicker happens every 20-30 seconds and when I use it for video calls via zoom or teams, I get a message saying either NoCamerasAreAttached or camera failed." It’s like the system doesn’t even recognize that there’s a camera at all.

I have tried few things.

  • Looked for a physical camera switch on the laptop — pretty sure this model doesn’t have one.

  • Checked privacy settings — camera access is on for all apps and services.

  • I have tried uninstalling the device and driver both from Device manager

  • the camera app shows in the start menu but it doesn't work after that

Hi @HolyCitizen,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for providing the exact model and for explaining everything you have already tried. I understand the camera briefly activates, the light comes on for a moment, and then it disappears, with Zoom/Teams reporting “NoCamerasAreAttached” or “Camera failed.”

I also want to clarify one point: the Victus by HP 15.6-inch Gaming Laptop 15-fb0000 (598U8AV) does not have a physical camera privacy switch/shutter on this model, so there is no hardware camera switch that needs to be turned on. HP lists this configuration with an integrated HP Wide Vision 720p HD Camera

Since you have already uninstalled the camera and driver, I would not repeat that step yet.

Please check these two things:
1. Check whether Windows detects the camera
Right-click Start → Device Manager.

Check under:

  • Cameras
  • Imaging devices

If the camera is listed, please tell us its exact name and whether there is a yellow warning mark.

If it is not listed:

  • Select View → Show hidden devices
  • Then select Action → Scan for hardware changes
  • Restart the notebook and check again.

2. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
Restart the notebook and repeatedly press F2.

Open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI and check whether a Webcam/Camera test is available. If it is, run the test and let us know the result.

This is important because it will help determine whether the problem is with Windows/software or the camera hardware itself.

Please also send us a screenshot of Device Manager with the Cameras/Imaging devices sections visible, especially if the camera is missing.

Once we know whether the camera is being detected by Windows and HP Diagnostics, we can provide the appropriate next step rather than having you repeat driver troubleshooting unnecessarily.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @HolyCitizen,

Thank you for getting back to us and for running the F2 HP PC Hardware Diagnostics. Since the camera test passed, that is helpful information.

As the next step, please open the Camera app on the PC and check whether the camera works there and whether you can see the live camera preview.

If you also use the camera through an application such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom, please test it there as well.

Please let us know whether the camera works in the Camera app, Teams/Zoom, or neither. Based on the result, we can determine the next appropriate step.

It's the same. Camera is showing in the start menu, but not working. Same as before
