Hello, I’ve been using an HP Victus gaming laptop for 6 months, and I’m having a serious issue with CPU temperatures — it goes up to 97°C, and no matter what I do, I can’t stop it. The fans are clean, the thermal paste is new, and everything including the BIOS is up to date. I’m even undervolting, but in CPU-based games, the processor still reaches 97°C.

Hi @EmirTas

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Your HP Victus 16 reaching 97°C during CPU-heavy tasks—even after cleaning, repasting, BIOS updates, and undervolting—suggests a thermal design limitation rather than a fault. While alarming, this behavior is common in high-performance gaming laptops under sustained load.

Why This Happens

Gaming laptops like the Victus 16 prioritize compact design and performance, which often leads to aggressive thermal profiles

Based on recent reports from other Victus 16 users, even with fans at full speed and undervolting, CPU temps can spike to 95–100°C during demanding workloads. This is especially true for models with Intel Core i5/i7 HX series or AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS, which are designed to operate near thermal limits.

What You Can Do

1. Limit Maximum Processor State

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Advanced settings
  • Expand Processor power management > Maximum processor state
  • Set to 85–90% on battery and plugged in

This reduces peak wattage draw and helps cap thermal output without major performance loss.

2. Use HP OMEN Gaming Hub or BIOS to Adjust Fan Curve

  • Open OMEN Gaming Hub (preinstalled on most Victus models)
  • Go to Performance Control > Manual Mode
  • Set fans to maximum RPM during gaming

If unavailable, check BIOS for fan control options under Thermal or Advanced tabs.

3. Elevate the Rear of the Laptop

  • Use a cooling pad or even a simple wedge to lift the rear edge
  • Ensure airflow is unobstructed beneath the chassis

Passive airflow improvements can reduce temps by 5–10°C.

4. Monitor for Throttling

  • Use HWMonitor or ThrottleStop to check if the CPU is throttling
  • If performance drops sharply at 97°C, thermal throttling is active and protecting the hardware

Throttling is a safeguard—not a failure—and helps prevent long-term damage.

5. Check for Background CPU Load

  • Open Task Manager > Performance tab
  • Look for high CPU usage from background apps or services

Even idle background tasks can push temps if the system is already thermally saturated.

Is It Safe?

Yes—Intel and AMD CPUs are rated up to 100°C, and laptops like the Victus are designed to operate near that threshold. However, sustained operation at 95–100°C can accelerate wear over time. Your proactive steps (cleaning, repasting, undervolting) are already mitigating risk.

Let me know your exact CPU model and whether you’re seeing performance drops—I’ll tailor further steps based on that. You're doing everything right by staying ahead of the issue.
