Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello. I've noticed that when i use my laptop on my living room tv with the lid closed, i lose almost all wifi speed. I still get a full signal on wifi, but it is crawling slow. This is a major dealbreaker for me because this is how i use my laptop 98% of the time. All power settings are correct but i can't maintain over 5-10 mbps when it's closed. Is there a fix for this or do i need another laptop?

Best regards Anders

Hello Whampo

I'm not sure why your system is having this issue. Some designs suffer this more than others.

I'm using the 17 inch version of your case design and I do not have any problems when the lid is closed.

Does this happen immediately when the lid closes or does the laptop go to sleep first?

I tried replicating your issue and couldn't. I'm using a Netgear AC router on a 5GHz channel, 25 feet away with two walls between it.

Monitors set to Extend and power options set to high performance and to do nothing when the lid closes.

Plugged in to the charger or battery only mode, made no difference.

I know of some Dells and Macbooks that also had this issue. It was said the design of the base had some metal near the antenna when the lid closed and caused interference. This may or may not be whats happening with yours, but I have no way of knowing.

That is an issue inherent to the design of Wifi antennas. Most laptops have antennas that are only optimal when your lid is raised upright, and most cheap wifi routers have antennas that only function correctly when the router is in its upright position. Think of how this works as a piece of plywood against a wave. When it faces the wave, more water hits the board. When the edge is toward the water, the water just goes right by.

This can also be an issue with your overall wifi environment. See if your area is congested with signals or set up your router for mixed-mode operation.

When im doing a wifi speed test and close the screen down the download speed drops immediately. The upload speed doesnt seem to be as effected by it as the download speed is. Im about 20 feet away from the router behind 1 thin wall. Even though the speed drops down im still getting a full signal on the router. I installed the intel wifi driver from HPs driver page. This might just be a flawed desig but its still pretty annoying. When i place a pack of cigarettes under the screen i get a full download speed.

Just a thought.

Even though you have the power options set to not do anything with the lid closed, see if unchecking the box for Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power under power management tab in the wifi properties > Device Manager.

Reboot and test it.

Does it help any?

Yeah, it sounds like your laptop has antennas that are not omnidirectional. While this is ideal for beamforming application, it suffers if the antennas are in any position other than optimal.

Thanks, this seemed like I good idea but it didn't fix the problem for me.

This is the EXACT same this as I am seeing in  my HP Pavilion 15-bw046no which I started using only a few days ago. It does not seem to be that the lid physically blocks the wifi reception. Did you find a solution? I don't smoke 😉
