I am experiencing white dots/artifacts appearing on my screen, especially in areas with darker colors. The issue seems persistent and the dots area starts growing
I’ve already tried:
- Updating graphics drivers
- Adjusting graphics settings
Please advise on further troubleshooting steps or if hardware service is required.

Hi @ameysawant
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing screen artifacts (white dots) on your display, particularly in darker areas. This type of issue can be caused by several factors, ranging from software issues to hardware problems. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot the problem:
1. Check for Software/Graphics Driver Issues
Since you’ve already updated the graphics drivers, there are a few additional steps you can take to rule out software-related issues:
a. Rollback Driver Updates
Sometimes, the latest graphics drivers can cause issues instead of fixing them. Try rolling back to an earlier driver version.
- Steps:
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics card, and choose Properties.
- Go to the Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
- Restart your computer and check if the issue persists.
b. Check Graphics Settings
- Reset Settings: If you made custom adjustments to your graphics settings (such as anti-aliasing or other visual enhancements), try resetting them to default. Some settings, like V-Sync or Frame Buffer, could be causing issues.
- Disable Hardware Acceleration: If the problem occurs during browsing or using specific applications, try disabling hardware acceleration in the program settings (for example, in your browser or media player).
2. Test with External Display
To determine if the issue is with the laptop's display or the graphics card, try connecting your laptop to an external monitor or TV.
- If the white dots/artifacts also appear on the external display, this indicates a graphics card or software issue.
- If the dots/artifacts only appear on your laptop screen, then it’s likely a hardware issue with the display itself.
3. Run a Display Test
Many laptops and monitors have built-in diagnostics to test the display.
- HP PCs: Restart your computer and press Esc or F2 to access the diagnostic menu. Run the Display Test and check if the artifacts appear during this test.
4. Check for Overheating
Artifacts can sometimes be a symptom of overheating, especially if the issue appears during gaming or intensive applications.
- Check Temperatures: Use software like HWMonitor or Core Temp to check the temperatures of your CPU and GPU. If the temperatures are too high, it might indicate poor cooling performance or a hardware problem.
- Clean the Vents: If you have access to the interior of the laptop, make sure that dust is not blocking the cooling vents. Overheating can lead to graphical glitches.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
