As seen on the image (MSI Afterburner), my discrete graphics card keeps turning on and off while idle. Works perfectly in games, or when on charger. When I disconnect my laptop from the charger, it starts doing this in idle. This cuts battery life from 6 hours to 3. This began 1 week ago. Im thinking nvidia driver or msi afterburner does this?

Hi @Abel1157,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It's possible that the issue with your discrete graphics card turning on and off while idle on battery power could be related to power management settings, graphics drivers, or other system configurations. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.

Power Management Settings:

  • Check your power management settings to ensure that your laptop is not set to a power-saving mode that aggressively manages the graphics card. You can adjust these settings in the Power Options of your operating system.
  • Make sure that the power plan you are using while on battery power is not set to a mode that restricts the performance of the GPU.

Graphics Drivers:

  • Update your graphics drivers to the latest version. You can do this through the official website of your GPU manufacturer (NVIDIA, AMD) or through the device manager on your computer.
  • If you recently updated your drivers and the issue started, consider rolling back to a previous version to see if the problem persists.

MSI Afterburner:

  • MSI Afterburner is primarily used for overclocking and monitoring, but it's worth checking if any profiles or settings are causing the issue. Try disabling MSI Afterburner temporarily and see if the problem persists.

Windows Updates:

  • Make sure that your operating system is up-to-date with the latest updates and patches. Sometimes, Windows updates can resolve compatibility issues.

BIOS/UEFI Update:

  • Check if there is a BIOS/UEFI update available for your laptop. HP release updates that can address hardware-related issues.

Battery Settings:

  • In some cases, battery management settings can affect GPU behavior. Check if there are any specific settings related to graphics performance in your laptop's battery settings.

Power Plan Customization:

  • Customize your power plan settings to ensure that the GPU behaves appropriately when on battery power. You can access these settings through the Power Options in the Control Panel.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
