Hi @vj311,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Pavilion gaming laptop's fans are running while idle but not too loudly while gaming, there are a few possible reasons for this behavior. Here are some common factors that may contribute to this situation.

  • Background processes: Check your Task Manager or Activity Monitor (depending on your operating system) to see if there are any background processes or applications consuming CPU resources. Sometimes, certain programs may run in the background and use your laptop's resources, causing the fans to spin up.
  • Windows updates or maintenance tasks: Windows updates or maintenance tasks like disk cleanup, defragmentation, or antivirus scans can put a temporary load on the CPU, causing the fans to kick in even when the laptop is idle.
  • Power settings: Make sure your laptop's power settings are optimized. If your laptop is set to a high-performance mode even when idle, it may cause the fans to run more frequently.
  • Dust and debris: Dust accumulation inside your laptop can lead to increased temperatures, making the fans work harder to keep the system cool. Consider cleaning the vents and internal components of your laptop.
  • Driver updates: Ensure that your graphics card and other drivers are up to date. Sometimes, outdated drivers can cause unexpected behavior, including increased fan activity.
  • Ambient temperature: The environmental temperature can also play a role in fan behavior. If the room is warm, the laptop may need to use the fans more frequently to cool down the internal components.
  • BIOS settings: Check your laptop's BIOS settings for any options related to fan control. Some laptops have BIOS settings that allow you to customize fan behavior.

If you've tried the above steps and the issue persists, it's essential to determine if the fan activity is within normal limits. Gaming laptops are designed to handle increased heat during gaming sessions, which is why you might notice the fans working harder during gaming but not when idle.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
