Warranty: expired approximately one month ago

REQUEST
Out-of-warranty goodwill exception for battery replacement, plus a firmware
defect report. The underlying fault developed while the system was still under
warranty; I only completed diagnosis this week.

DEFECT 1 - Hybrid graphics mode does not power down the discrete GPU
The RTX 5070 Laptop GPU never enters D3 in Hybrid mode. Measured at idle:
- Performance state P4, 15-18W draw
- 0% GPU utilization, 0 MiB memory allocated, no clients attached
- nvidia-smi reports "Idle: Not Active" with nothing using the GPU
- Internal panel is driven by the Intel Arc 140T iGPU, so the dGPU has no
display attached and no reason to be powered
- GPU sensor 49C at idle vs 36C chassis - genuinely dissipating power

Persists across:
- Driver 32.0.16.1074 and 32.0.16.1656 (clean install)
- BIOS F.13 and F.14
- NVIDIA overlay disabled, OMEN Gaming Hub terminated, clean reboot

Setting GPU Mode to "Integrated Graphics Only" drops total system draw from
27W to 15W, confirming the discrete GPU as the source. Hybrid mode is the
defective path.

DEFECT 2 - Accelerated battery degradation caused by Defect 1
Windows battery reports show active runtime falling from 7h16m (Dec 2025) to
2h27m (Aug 2026). A 20% capacity loss cannot produce a 66% runtime loss - the
cause is the ~3x elevated power draw and continuous thermal load from Defect 1,
beginning approximately March-April 2026, while under warranty.

Battery condition:
- Design capacity: 70,070 mWh
- Full charge capacity: 56,333 mWh (80%)
- Cycle count: 87 of 1000 rated
- Expected capacity at 8.7% of rated cycle life: 97-98%

The pack has lost 20% of capacity at 8.7% of its rated cycle life - roughly 10x
the expected degradation rate. Cycle wear cannot explain this at 87 cycles. The
cause is calendar aging accelerated by the continuous thermal load from the
discrete GPU defect, with the battery held at high state of charge on AC.

REQUESTED RESOLUTION
1. Battery replacement under goodwill exception, given the causing defect
arose during the warranty period.
2. BIOS/firmware fix so Hybrid graphics mode correctly powers down the
discrete GPU. Integrated Graphics Only is currently the only workaround,
and it disables the dGPU entirely.

Thank you for providing the detailed information and the testing you have already completed. Since you have already tested multiple BIOS versions, NVIDIA drivers, clean installations, and different graphics modes, I recommend a few targeted checks to determine what is keeping the RTX 5070 active in hybrid graphics mode.

 

Please try the following:

1. Check which applications are using the NVIDIA GPU.

  • Open Task Manager.
  • Check the Processes and Details tabs.
  • Look for any application showing activity on the NVIDIA GPU.
  • Close any unnecessary applications and check whether the RTX 5070 remains active.

2. Check Windows Graphics settings.

  • Go to: Settings > System > Display > Graphics
  • Review the applications listed and check whether any unnecessary applications are set to high performance (RTX 5070).

3. Perform a clean boot.

  • Temporarily perform a Windows clean boot and test the system in Hybrid Graphics mode.
  • If the RTX 5070 continues to remain active with no applications using it, please note the result.

4. Compare the power consumption.

  • Under the same idle conditions, compare the system power consumption in:
  • Hybrid Graphics
  • Integrated Graphics Only
  • Please record the approximate power draw and the NVIDIA GPU power state in each mode.

5. Run an HP Battery Check

  • Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI → Component Tests → Power → Battery Check and let us know the result. 
  • If a failure is reported, please provide the Failure ID.

Please let me know the results of these checks, particularly whether the RTX 5070 remains active after a clean boot with no applications using the GPU. This will help determine the appropriate next step.
