What would be the part for the keyboard assembly? It sounds like the circuits are damaged for some reason, and hence it doesn't really matter if the keycap is off if the keyboard won't input that letter anyway.

The person helping you might be out of the office now. But you've asked twice for the keyboard part number so maybe this will help...
That keyboard is only sold by HP as far as I know and its not cheap. Others have inquired about that series also as they have had key failures too. Might be a weakness with those models, I don't know.
The HP Parts Finder shows the only keyboard for that model came in a USA and english Frnch/Canadian version, but the USA version is the only one still available. Part number 940605-001

Thank you, that's about what I expected in terms of cost for parts (not to mention the cost of installation, since I know replacing the keyboard assembly on a laptop is far from straightforward and I wouldn't try it myself). However I wanted to be sure of my options.
Most likely I will just continue using a USB keyboard with the laptop. I had originally purchased because I used it at a few different places, but at this point it practically never moves and is essentially a desktop anyway.
