I tried out the Instant Ink program to save money as advertised.  I received more ink than needed and my printer was due for replacement, so I cancelled.  After cancellation, they continued to charge my card one more time and send out a full box of new ink.  What they don't tell you is that the ink cartridges have a chip in them that tells them not t work if you cancel.  So now I have a full box of new cartridges plus cartridges that are half full currently in my printer which are deemed unusable.  My printer just has an error code and will not print.  Customer service told me the only way to make them work is to re-enroll in the monthly subscription!  I spoke with 3 agents, all whom were located oversees.  They would not transfer me to a US agent.  They also would not offer a refund for the full box of useless cartridges.  They just wanted me to send them back to them.  This is a bait and switch program and highly unethical.  STAY AWAY!

The above is one of the biggest misconceptions regarding the Instant Ink program.  When you sign up for the Instant Ink program you are NOT purchasing ink, you are purchasing a subscription to a set number of pages per month.  The ink is supplied, but remains the property of HP and must be returned if you cancel the program in accordance with the terms of service.  See sections 5.d and 9.c of the terms of service here.

The billing for Instant Ink happens in arrears, the last bill will arrive after the Instant Ink subscription has been completed.  The bill you get is for the prior month's subscription and any additional usage.
