Hi @TJTietze,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP DeskJet 3700 still shows the black ink as empty after replacing it, try these troubleshooting steps.
Check Cartridge Compatibility
- Ensure that you have installed a compatible cartridge for your printer model.
- The HP DeskJet 3700 series usually uses HP 65 (US), HP 304 (UK/Europe), or HP 123/HP 803 (other regions).
Remove & Reinstall the Cartridge
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the cartridge access door and remove the black ink cartridge.
- Clean the copper contacts gently with a lint-free cloth and reinsert it.
- Close the door, plug in the printer, and turn it back on.
Reset the Printer
- Remove the cartridge and leave the printer on.
- Unplug the power cable from the printer and wait 10 minutes.
- Reinsert the power cable, turn on the printer, and reinstall the black cartridge.
Run a Printer Diagnostic
- Use HP Smart App (Windows/macOS) → Select Printer → Printer Reports → Print Quality Diagnostic Page.
- If the black ink isn’t detected, try cleaning the printhead from the HP Smart app.
Check for Firmware Updates
- Go to HP Support and search for firmware updates for the DeskJet 3700.
- Install any available updates.
Try a Different Black Cartridge
- If possible, test with another black cartridge. If a second cartridge works, the first one may be faulty.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
