Hi @TJTietze,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP DeskJet 3700 still shows the black ink as empty after replacing it, try these troubleshooting steps.

Check Cartridge Compatibility

  • Ensure that you have installed a compatible cartridge for your printer model.
  • The HP DeskJet 3700 series usually uses HP 65 (US), HP 304 (UK/Europe), or HP 123/HP 803 (other regions).

Remove & Reinstall the Cartridge

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the cartridge access door and remove the black ink cartridge.
  • Clean the copper contacts gently with a lint-free cloth and reinsert it.
  • Close the door, plug in the printer, and turn it back on.

Reset the Printer

  • Remove the cartridge and leave the printer on.
  • Unplug the power cable from the printer and wait 10 minutes.
  • Reinsert the power cable, turn on the printer, and reinstall the black cartridge.

Run a Printer Diagnostic

  • Use HP Smart App (Windows/macOS) → Select PrinterPrinter ReportsPrint Quality Diagnostic Page.
  • If the black ink isn’t detected, try cleaning the printhead from the HP Smart app.

Check for Firmware Updates

  • Go to HP Support and search for firmware updates for the DeskJet 3700.
  • Install any available updates.

Try a Different Black Cartridge

  • If possible, test with another black cartridge. If a second cartridge works, the first one may be faulty.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
