Black ink not working

macOS 10.15 Catalina

Printer HP Photosmart 5520

Black ink was empty. Put in a new cartridge. Printed around 15 pages without problems. Then got stripes etc. Cleaned printer heads. Problem remained. Also put in new cyan, magenta and yellow cartridges. Cleaned printer heads several times. Got nice staples with a distinct black border and clear black text on the diagnostic sheet. But when I try to print a black text, I get an empty page.

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you. This seems like a hardware issue.

  • Try making a standalone copy in black and color to check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.
  • Have you tried printing different types of documents like PDF, Word or Webpages and check if the issue persists?

Print a Print Quality Diagnostic report

  1. From the control panel home screen, touch the Settings icon .

  2. Touch Tools, and then touch Print Quality Report.

  3. Check the print quality.

Perform the steps mentioned in this document to resolve the print quality issues.
