12 months or so ago, I bought a used printer from someone who used to be sunbscribed to instant ink.
I was Assured that I could continue using the ink until the cartridges run out and then choose to either register with instant ink or purchase individual carts as and when I chose? The printer has worked fine, even though it’s not used much, but When I switch in the printer this time a message appears ‘Cannot print, contact instant ink’ I am not sure why this is happening now, there is still one colour cart that is full and the black one is nearly empty which I was going to eventually replace, as I’m aware it will still work with just one cartridge apparently?
can someone advise please why Its not allowing me to print, is it because of technical issue like the heads, or because the black is very low or is it because instant ink have done this deliberately?..it doesn’t tell me the issue and I can’t get to speak to anyone and the AI is simply useless as it doesn’t provide the question that’s relevant to my problem/ situation. Will it work if I buy a black cartridge to add to the colour, or am I forced to sign up now with instant ink?
Thanks

Hi @Caznsteve,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The message you're seeing, "Cannot print, contact instant ink," indicates that there might be an issue with the Instant Ink subscription or your printer's connection to the Instant Ink service. When you use an HP printer with Instant Ink, it's designed to communicate with HP's servers to monitor ink levels and automatically send replacement cartridges when they are low. However, in your case, you mentioned that the printer was previously subscribed to Instant Ink, and you're trying to use it without an active subscription.
Here's what you can do to resolve the issue:
- Check Your Internet Connection: Ensure that your printer is connected to the internet. Sometimes, if the printer loses its connection to the internet, it may display this message. Reconnect your printer to your Wi-Fi network if necessary.
- Remove Previous Instant Ink Account: If the printer still has the previous owner's Instant Ink account information stored, you might need to remove it. This can often be done by resetting the printer to its factory defaults. Check the printer's manual or HP's website for instructions on how to do this.
- Manually Bypass the Instant Ink Message: If you want to continue using your printer without Instant Ink and you're certain you'll manage the ink cartridges manually, you can try bypassing the message. To do this, you might need to search online for instructions specific to your printer model. Keep in mind that bypassing the message may not always work, as HP printers are designed to encourage users to subscribe to Instant Ink.
- Purchase Individual Cartridges: You can always purchase individual ink cartridges for your printer if you prefer not to use Instant Ink.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
