Common problems for INSTANT INK, HP+ PLANS: INK AND TONER
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Instant Ink. Check out this link: HP INSTANT INK, HP+ PLANS: INK AND TONER. .

I'm trying to remove a printer from my HP Smart account so that someone else can add it to theirs.  When I attempt to remove it, I get a question at the last step that states:

"Your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 series is enrolled in HP Instant Ink and can't be removed until your subscription is cancelled.

Are you sure you want to proceed?" with only 2 choices: Cancel / Manage Subscription

Cancel stops the process of removing it, and Manage Subscription takes me to the HP Instant Ink subscription page, where I have confirmed that I've already cancelled my Instant Ink subscription effective 1-12-2025

Please help me remove my printer from my account completely.

Hi @checkbox,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating this can be. You’ve already cancelled Instant Ink, yet the printer still feels “locked” to your account. This happens because HP Smart won’t allow removal until the Instant Ink cancellation is fully processed and the printer is released from the subscription system.

Step 1: Confirm Instant Ink Cancellation Status

Step 2: Wait for Final Billing Cycle

HP keeps the printer enrolled until the cancellation date to allow any remaining pages and billing cycle to complete. After that date:

  • The printer will automatically be removed from Instant Ink.
  • You can then remove it from HP Smart.

Step 3: Remove Printer from HP Smart

Once the cancellation date has passed:

  • Open HP SmartMy Printers.
  • Select the printer → Remove Printer.
  • This time, the Instant Ink warning should not appear.

If the Date Has Passed and You Still Can’t Remove It

  • Sign out and back into HP Smart.
  • Clear app cache or reinstall HP Smart.
  • If the issue persists, contact HP Support to manually unlink the printer: HP Contact Support

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
