Hi @mgmetro,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I understand that you are facing issues with Cartridges. I'd like to help!

As you mentioned you have issues printing from your printer and you are getting an error Cartridge cannot be used until the printer is enrolled in HP instant ink

  • If you use HP ePrint but do not have an HP Connected account, your printer Web Services might be already turned on, but the printer claim code might be expired. HP Instant Ink enrollment requires you to create an HP Connected account and register your printer with a valid printer claim code.
To obtain a valid printer claim code, turn off Web Services using the printer control panel, and then turn on Web Services again.
Touch or press the HP ePrint icon, and then touch or press Settings.
If your printer control panel does not have a button or icon, navigate to Web Services Setup, Network Setup, or Wireless Settings to open the Web Services menu, depending on your printer model.
Select Turn Off, Disable, or Remove Web Services, depending on your printer model.
Follow the on-screen instructions to turn off Web Services.
    Turn on Web Services again.
The information page prints with a new printer claim code.

  • NOTE: When you turn on Web Services again, your printer receives a new email address for HP ePrint. After you create an HP Connected account, you can customize the printer email address. Go to Setting Up an HP Connected Account for more information about customizing the printer email address.
After you turn on Web Services again, complete the steps in this document to Sign up and use the claim code to add your printer to HP Instant Ink to create an HP Connected account and enroll in HP Instant Ink.

I am unable to access the printer control panel because I can't get pass the message about the cartridges cannot be used until printer is enrolled in Instant Ink. When I turn on the printer that message is the first thing that the control panel shows so I'm not able to get to any settings on the printer. I do have an active account in HP Instant Ink for over a year.

Elohi_NR,

Any update on fixing my problem? It seems I can't get rid of the cartridge error message on the control panel until I can connect with the wifi network and I can't access the control panel to fix the connectivity problem until the cartridge message is gone. Can you or someone else at HP help me with this?

Hi, @mgmetro,

Thanks for replying.

Please follow the steps below.

Check the ink cartridge numbers

  • Make sure the cartridge model numbers match your printer and country/region.
  • Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.
  • Look at the cartridge labels.
  • The printer is enrolled in Instant Ink. The cartridges should be marked "Instant Ink". The numbers on Instant Ink cartridges are different from standard cartridges, and Instant Ink cartridges may be larger. Your printer is designed to work with the cartridges shipped to you by HP Instant Ink. If you see Cartridge cannot be used until the printer is enrolled messages, use HP's Virtual Agent for quick help, or go to HP Instant Ink support.
  • The printer is NOT enrolled in Instant Ink. Go to the HP Store to make sure that the cartridges are compatible. Your printer must be enrolled in Instant Ink to use Instant Ink cartridges.
  • Replace any incompatible cartridges.

NOTE: HP+ printers require Original HP cartridges.

Reset the printer

  • Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.
  • If your printer has a rechargeable battery, remove it.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.
  • NOTE:
  • HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.
  • Turn on the printer to complete the reset

Clean the ink cartridge electrical contacts

  • Remove any debris or buildup from the contacts on the cartridges.
  • Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.
  • Push in on the cartridge indicated in the error message to release it from the carriage.

Removing the ink cartridge

  • Wipe the copper-colored contact on the cartridge with a lint-free cloth.

Cleaning the contact on the ink cartridge

  • Slide the cartridge into its color-coded slot until it clicks into place.
  • Repeat these steps for any other cartridges indicated in the error message.
  • Close the door or lid to the cartridge access area.

Replace the problem ink cartridge

  • Installing a new cartridge can resolve ink-related errors.
  • Obtain a replacement cartridge.
  • The printer is enrolled in Instant Ink. Replacement cartridges are part of your subscription. If you have another Instant Ink cartridge on hand, install it. Otherwise, contact HP Instant Ink support for a new cartridge.
  • The printer is NOT enrolled in Instant Ink. Go to the HP Store or a local retailer to find and purchase compatible supplies. HP recommends genuine HP cartridges.
  • NOTE:
  • If you have a defective HP cartridge, it might be under warranty. Go to About Original HP Cartridges for page yield and HP Limited Warranty information.
  • Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.
  • Remove the cartridge indicated in the error message, and then insert the new cartridge into the slot.
  • Repeat these steps to replace any other cartridges indicated in the error message.
  • Close the door or lid to the cartridge access area, and then follow any instructions to align the printer.

Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.

Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in the Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.

To confirm your warranty status, go to HP Product Warranty Check. Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.

Hope this helps.

The ink cartridges were sent to me as part of the Instant Ink program, which I am enrolled, and have been working until a few days ago so I know I have the correct cartridges installed. I cleaned the cartridge contacts as you suggested and reset the printer as you suggested. There has been no change in the status. It still isn't working. Thanks for your assistance.

Hi, I have sort of an answer to my own question:

1. Turn printer on

2. Remove power cable from printer

3. Unplug power cable from outlet

WAIT 60 seconds.

Insert power cable into printer, plug in printer, and run a test page.  My test page is a girl with glasses wearing a hat. I wish I could say I figured this out myself, but found this info searching around. Should help!

I guess when in doubt power down, power up!
