Hi  @samsonb20,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I hear your concern on how  this must feel especially since you’re printer now can’t use it because it’s still tied to the previous owner’s SmartInk account.

Could you kindly share the exact printer model  ?

Just to confirm the situation:

  • Have you purchased the printer second-hand.
  • It’s currently enrolled in SmartInk under the old owner’s account.
  • You’re unable to add it to your own SmartInk account, and the printer won’t function without enrollment.

Here are a few  steps you can try :

1.Factory Reset the Printer

On most HP printers, you can reset by going to Setup → Printer Maintenance → Restore → Restore Factory Defaults.

This clears previous account information stored on the device.

2.Remove Web Services

On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup → Web Services Settings → Remove Web Services.

This disconnects the printer from the old HP account.

3.Re-add Web Services

After removal, re-enable Web Services.

4.Check Firmware Updates

Make sure the printer is running the latest firmware. Sometimes older firmware versions don’t properly clear account data.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
