Printer driver update was available but would not complete installation due to color ink cartridge not communicating with computer.   I went to the community forum and found a virtual chat regarding the same issue, and Insta-ink shipped a new cartridge.

I understand you've already taken some good steps to resolve the issue with your HP DeskJet 4158e All-in-One Printer. Since the color ink cartridge is not communicating with the computer, and you've received a new cartridge from Insta-ink, you might want to follow these steps:

Install the New Cartridge:

  • Make sure the printer is turned on.
  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove the old color ink cartridge and replace it with the new one, ensuring it clicks into place.

Check Cartridge Placement:

  • Verify that the cartridge is properly seated and that there is no protective tape remaining on the contacts.

Reinstall Printer Driver:

  • Since the driver update failed, try reinstalling the driver manually.
  • Go to HP's support site and download the latest driver for your DeskJet 4158e.
  • Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions. Make sure to restart your computer and printer after installation.

Update Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. You can usually find this option in the printer’s settings menu or on the HP support site.

Printer Diagnostics:

  • Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool to diagnose and fix issues with the printer. You can download it from HP’s support site.

The issue is that I needed a replacement color ink cartridge, and Insta Ink did not see the need.  The new cartridge they had sent was faulty.  There was no contact information available for me to request a new cartridge.  I finally found a helpful phone number on my credit card bill. The person at that number walked me through diagnostic steps confirming that I had a bad cartridge. He then transferred me to someone at Insta Ink to request a new cartridge. Fortunately, he also informed me that I can still print with the black ink cartridge if I simply remove the faulty color cartridge.  At least I can print in black and white while waiting several more days for the delivery.
