I've been using the HP Instant Ink replacement cartridges but when replacing one today (Yellow), the cartridge is read as "Defective" on the small screen that my printer has. It feels full of ink but won't work even through I've restarted and reseated it multiple times. Any suggestions??

Hi @Tone_21,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Instant Ink yellow cartridge is showing as “Defective” even after reseating and restarting, here’s what I would suggest trying:

1. Power Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn the printer on.
  • Reseat the yellow cartridge again.

2. Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Remove the yellow cartridge.
  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.
  • Let it dry for 5 minutes, then reinstall.

3. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Go to your printer’s control panel or HP Smart app.
  • Navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer.
  • Install any available updates.

4. Try Another Instant Ink Cartridge (if available)

  • If you have a spare yellow cartridge, try installing it to confirm whether the issue is with the cartridge or the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
